Editorial Review

ABOUT SPECIALIZED OUTPATIENT SERVICES, INC.

Specialized Outpatient Services (SOS), Inc. is a rehabilitation center located in Oklahoma City, Okla., that has been providing outpatient rehabilitation, testing, and support services since January 2000.

Clients can enroll in a DUI rehabilitation program with associated legal services, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for adolescents, adults, and families that are gender specific, as well as other outpatient services. The facility also offers family support services, including parenting education courses and family counseling.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

SOS provides outpatient services that cover a wide range of client needs, including substance abuse treatment services. Clients can enroll in the program at will, but fare better with recommendations from their current or previous programs. Assessments can be made by other organizations, and clients can be referred with the appropriate paperwork.

The substance abuse rehabilitation program begins with an early intervention phase of treatment designed to quickly address negative habits. Clients meet once per week for 12 weeks, as well as participate in random drug screenings. Note that this program is intended for clients who are beginning to show signs of substance abuse rather than those with a substance dependency.

Clients with a chemical misuse disorder can enroll in the extended outpatient program. It consists of four phases that gradually move clients through the process of understanding and addressing their dependence issues, as well as any co-occurring mental health disorders. The program also includes individual counseling and 12-step principles, as well as random drug screenings.

The organization also operates a women’s sober house. This gender-specific structured living environment enables residents to participate in the IOP and other outpatient offerings. In the state of Oklahoma, SOS is one of 57 substance abuse treatment facilities that offers IOP services to clients and among 57.6 percent with specially tailored programs for adult women.

Aside from substance abuse treatment, SOS provides drug and alcohol testing services, which can be used to support sober living and legal initiatives. This includes in-home, hair follicle, and random UA testing. A variety of other tests including urinalysis, saliva, immediate result, and adulteration and confirmation testing are available through the program.

SOS also offers DUI educational programs for offenders with DUI charges and, as such, is among 21.5 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in Oklahoma with specially tailored programs for DUI/DWI clients. There are 10- and 24-hour programs available for those who are mandated to take the education courses by the legal system.

Additionally, SOS provides family services to help support clients' loved ones during treatments. These offerings include educational courses and family counseling to help families address issues. Families can receive phone consultations to help with referrals and other administrative processes. Spiritual and alumni services also may be available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, SOS is a nonprofit organization, which is certified by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. It is one of 97 substance abuse treatment facilities in Oklahoma accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). There is little specific information regarding staff credentials, however, the website currently states: “Our staff consists of qualified professionals who have a combined experience of over 35 years serving our community.”

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The SOS sober living environment for women is Amethyst House, which accommodates six women. Residents can stay from four months to one year while they are in their first year of recovery.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The one former client surveyed by Rehabs.com about SOS to date submitted a satisfactory, yet scant review of the facility. The anonymous alum only provided a rating for the treatment effectiveness of the program, expressed numerically as four out of five stars. In addition, the reviewer wanted Rehabs.com to know that treatment was “Effective overall.”

Secondary sites yielded favorable coverage of the facility to date: 3.6 out of five stars based on 50 reviews on Google; and 4.4 stars based on 48 reviews on Facebook, which the organization can manage. [1] [2] Note the Google posts predominantly are about services related to the UA Department, however, some commented about the treatment program.

On both sites, positive reviewers praised the friendly, caring staff and strong support provided through recovery, such as H.M. on Facebook, who wrote: “SOS help me in so many ways the people there are friendly and care about their clients and you get friendships with people who understand what recovery all about.” J.C. echoed the sentiment on Google: “This place gave me my life back....I'm forever grateful!.” Negative reviewers commented about rude treatment, unfair assessments and financial practices, such as K.G. on Facebook, who referred to the facility as an “Awful place with awful people.”

FINANCING

Women participating in the SOS Amethyst House sober living environment are required to pay a $125 deposit and weekly rent in the amount of $100 for sober house only, $125 for sober living plus outpatient services, or $160 for sober house and IOP.

Insurance coverage is not mentioned on the organization’s website. Self-pay options are available, as well as a sliding fee scale. Clients may discuss reduced payment options during the application process.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://x.facebook.com/specializedoutpatientservices/reviews/?ref=pageinternal&mtnav=0
