Editorial Review

ABOUT GENESIS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Genesis HealthCare System is a network of dozens of facilities spanning a six-county region in southeastern Ohio. The organization runs a range of services and programs, on both inpatient and outpatient levels, for individuals and families affected by issues of behavioral health concerns and drug and alcohol addiction. It is one of the only 127 (31.3 percent) treatment programs in the state with specifically-tailored groups for adolescents, in addition to its services for adults.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

There are several treatment options available for adults and teens requiring different levels of care. Designed specifically for teens (ages 13 to 18), the Genesis Drug and Alcohol Recovery program is a five-week program that meets twice weekly for two hours at a time. Despite the program’s brevity, teens will cover a variety of topics and principles central to recovery like peer influence, family issues, codependency, and more.

In the state of Ohio, 7.55 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 have participated in illicit drug use in the past month, and 2.06 percent of adolescents in the state needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for alcohol use in the past year. Parents may attend family sessions beginning in the fourth week of treatment.

For adults seeking recovery from drugs and alcohol, intensive outpatient (IOP) groups meet both day and evening. While following the 12-step model of recovery, IOP participants learn the importance of managing their emotions and stress as well as how being dependent on substances may alter their brain chemistry. Day sessions meet on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for 13 to 15 weeks; night sessions meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a total of six to nine weeks.

Additional program options include a five-week relapse prevention track that meets on Thursday mornings, continuing care groups for both adult and teens who have completed primary treatment, and a class for pregnant women and women who plan on having children.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Accredited by Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services, Genesis HealthCare employs a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, certified counselors, therapists, social workers, and support staff. In fact, all substance abuse treatment facilities in Ohio have continuing education requirements for staff. The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date awarded the center staff's level of training and experience three out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to its webpage, the organization provides psychiatric care under three different settings: a “private, secure unit for adults,” a “pediatric/adolescent unit,” and a “closed unit for intensive psychiatric treatment.” The psychiatric unit is smoke-free, and smoking cessation classes are available.

In their Rehabs.com survey, an anonymous family member gave this facility three stars for its accommodations and quality of meals, and four stars for its level of cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from alumni of Genesis Healthcare System as of this writing. On Google, Genesis HealthCare System received an organization-wide average rating of 2.3 out of five stars, though most of the 34 reviewers to date reported on experiences outside of the behavioral health and drug and alcohol recovery departments. Google reviewer Christina, however, called the facility a “Horrible place” with “Horrible nurses and doctors.” “Better off getting help from a stranger in a van,” she quipped.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Though they found the program “Cost effective” and its staff “friendly,” the single survey respondent polled by Rehabs.com as of this writing felt that the program was unsuccessful in treating their loved one’s mental illness and addiction. “I think the staff needs more training on mental illness, and how it works with addiction,” the anonymous reviewer commented, indicating that she did not feel the treatment received was worth the cost. Still, high ratings of four stars were given to several categories, including the level of family participation and the admissions and discharge procedures, along with three-star ratings for counseling options and holistic offerings.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive staff feedback to date, but 32 Glassdoor reviewers have awarded the center overall a 3.2 out of five-star average, with no specific feedback on the behavioral health unit.[2]

FINANCING

Genesis HealthCare System accepts “a large number of health plans and networks” and provides free or reduced fees for individuals who meet federal poverty guidelines. The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date awarded a four-star rating for the center's affordability.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Genesis-HealthCare-System-ohio-Reviews-E30322.htm
