ABOUT OHIO VALLEY TEEN CHALLENGE

Based in Youngstown, Ohio, the Ohio Valley Teen Challenge (OVTC) provides Christian-based residential treatment to men 18 and older who are struggling with substance abuse. Treatment lasts between 12 and 14 months. It is one of 71 long-term residential facilities in the state. Medically-monitored detoxification is not available on-site. The company also operates a facility for women, Teen Challenge of the Firelands, in Ohio. It is a private non-profit.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

As the Ohio Valley Teen Challenge program is rooted in Christian values, clients will participate in Biblical teachings, daily prayer and worship, and pastoral counseling. The center does not utilize evidence-based therapies and is part of only 26.9 percent of Ohio facilities that does not offer 12-step-based programming.

Prior to admission, clients must take a TB test and a sports physical, and participate in an interview to determine if OVTC is an appropriate program for their needs.

The first four weeks of treatment is an orientation to introduce students to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the rules of the facility. This is followed by the Lower Growth period in which clients spend four months building upon what they have learned in orientation. The final phase, Upper Growth, begins at month five and includes a wider range of Bible study. Residents will participate in a work experience program where they will trained to do jobs like cooking, grounds maintenance, and more. GED education is allowed during the second half of treatment.

Clients will work individually and in groups to study Bible verses and memorize scripture. They will also participate in community service, off-campus recreational activities, and peer mentoring.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Ohio Valley Teen Challenge employs pastors, an intake coordinator, and staff mentors but does not include state or government licensed counselors and therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility is smoke-free and no nicotine products are permitted on campus. Amenities include a recreation room and an exercise/weight room, as well as an outdoor basketball court. The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com during the time of this writing gave the facility five out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities. The facility is handicap accessible and "reasonable accommodations" can be made for individuals with disabilities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, Rehabs.com no Ohio Valley Teen Challenge alumni have responded to the Rehabs.com survey. Through prayer and the wonderful staff, I was able to overcome the different challenges that faced me during new found walk with the Lord and Recover," wrote alumni J.E. "The staff and the group facilitators are very caring and understanding," added R.M. "The case managers are very patient and will work hard to best serve the client."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com awarded perfect five out of five star ratings to the center’s treatment effectiveness and accommodations and indicated that they would recommend the facility to others. The anonymous reviewer gave mediocre ratings to the facility’s exercise and holistic activities, its affordability and cleanliness, and treatment of co-occurring disorders. Though the reviewer gave two out of five ratings to the center’s counseling options and family participation, they called the center “awesome and very inspirational."

FINANCING

A non-refundable $1,000 admission fee must be paid prior to treatment. Tuition is based on a sliding scale of the family’s income and financial assistance is available to qualifying individuals. It is funded through financial contributions, donations, grants and fundraising events. Work experience programs also help raise operating dollars. OVTC is part of the 24 percent of Ohio facilities where private insurance is not accepted.

[1] GoogleReviews
