ABOUT NORTHCOAST BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE

One of six Joint Commission-accredited hospitals operated by the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services, Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (NBH) provides short-term, community-based treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings for adults struggling with chemical dependence, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring disorders. There is no indication online whether detoxification services are available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

In collaboration with community agencies, the hospital provides expert services “built on evidence-based best practices,” according to the state of Ohio’s website. The hospital primarily receives clients as referrals from mental health centers but does not accommodate walk-ins.

Evidence-based practices may include group counseling, educational classes, therapeutic recreation, and holistic treatments. According to its website, Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for individuals struggling with opioid dependency through a "low dose protocol." Individuals struggling with a primary or co-occurring mental health condition may also receive pharmacological intervention and ongoing medication management.

An alum’s review indicates the hospital offers a year of counseling at an outpatient facility as a form of aftercare.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The hospital’s leadership team consists of two physicians as well as a nurse, according to Ohio’s website. The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com about the staff’s level of training and experience at the time of this writing gave four and five out of five stars in this category.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to its website, NBH had a major renovation in 2013 that expanded the hospital by more than 100,000 square feet and improve existing facilities. Patient units, recreational, dietary and clinical areas were part of the upgrades.

Friends and family are able to visit loved ones, however, they are not allowed to bring harmful items such as weapons and lighters. Two visitors are allowed at a time, and visiting hours are between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. The treatment team will alter visitation hours for family members who work at night or have to travel long distances to the hospital.

In addition, two individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing wrote about “good meals” and “decent accommodations.”

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The one alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided a mostly negative review. They noted they wouldn’t go back to the facility nor recommend NBH to friends and family. They also gave the center one out of five stars when asked about its treatment effectiveness, and noted they relapsed six months later.

Offering two-star rating for the facility's group counseling and its ability to resolve conflict, the alum wrote: “All they gave me was meds that’s it,” adding, “No individual counseling. Will not go through such a horrible experience again.”

Reviews on Google are mostly negative as well. The 29 people who left reviews for Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare at the time of this writing contributed to the center’s two out of five-star average rating. Many alumni complained about the center’s food on Google, and wrote they received no counseling.[1]

“I was here twice there is nothing there that will help you,” alum Joseph wrote in a representative review. “The food is not enough for an adult and there is no counseling that will help you.”

On Facebook, where the facility may have the ability to control their own page, Northcoast received notably better reviews, with an average of 4.1 stars across forty review.[2] Gabe wrote that he appreciated that they were "Fighting for people with mental illness and addiction -- people like me" along with his five star review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The pair of loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided more positive reviews than alumni. They both gave four out of five stars for the center’s treatment effectiveness.

They gave three and five stars respectively when asked if they would recommend NBH. And, unlike alumni, they both praised the center’s accommodations and meals.

Although they offered four- and five-star ratings for the staff’s level of experience, one affirming how much “staff members care about you and your recovery,” the other highlighted communication issues. “Need better communication to the family in order for there to be effective treatment,” a loved one wrote.

FINANCING

According to the center’s website, NBH accepts insurance and state Medicaid.

[1]GoogleReviews

[2]https://www.facebook.com/pg/OhioMHAS/reviews/?ref=page_internal
