ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA STATE HOSPITAL

North Dakota State Hospital (NDSH) is a state-run mental health institution that has been in operation for nearly a century and a half. The Jamestown facility provides one of the state's only two (2.8 percent) short-term, inpatient treatment to individuals struggling with acute symptoms of psychiatric and substance use disorders. Residential care is focused on transitioning to ongoing recovery outside the hospital. NDSH also provides residential addiction treatment for adults at Tompkins Rehabilitation and Corrections Center on the hospital campus as well as operating a sex offenders unit. Outpatient mental health and addiction care is available through several regional clinics.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients seeking inpatient treatment should begin the process at a regional human services center run by the state, from which they can receive a referral to the hospital. A stay at North Dakota State Hospital ranges from a few days to a few months, focusing on stabilization. Primary diagnoses include such psychiatric conditions as trauma, depression, and psychosis, or chemical dependency. Most patients are experiencing serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI).

Chemical dependency clients are individuals who require medical intervention and observation and often have received a dual diagnosis of addiction and other mental illnesses. Co-occurring disorders receive integrated treatment. While remaining in the hospital, patients can expect to participate in individual and group psychotherapy, addiction and mental health education, spiritual counseling, and life skills training. According to a federal list of treatment facilities, cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies and medication-assisted therapy are utilized. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration also reports that NDSH offers detoxification services. Families are encouraged to participate in their loved one's rehabilitation process.

Tompkins Rehabilitation and Corrections Center provides similar chemical dependency treatment on-site to individuals referred by the court and in custody.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

NDSH employs psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed addiction counselors, recreational therapists, and social workers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This facility has a total capacity for 124 adults and eight children and adolescents in the main inpatient program, and another 90 beds for individuals in the corrections department chemical dependency program. This is an extremely large level of availability, as the average number of clients in a hospital residential program was 13 individuals, as of 2016. A transitional living program on campus provides residential treatment for 16 adults, according to the North Dakota State Hospital website. There is currently no other information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings.

However, data from the two individuals polled to date by Rehabs.com reveals general satisfaction with accommodations. The two survey respondents agreed on the high quality of the facility's cleanliness and upkeep, with ratings of four out of five stars from both. They gave the same rating for exercise and leisure activities. Opinions were split on the facility's policies regarding patients' communication with outside connections (reflected in three- and five-star ratings), and meals fared poorly with a two-star rating from one individual.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from any former patients of North Dakota State Hospital and written feedback is scarce on third-party review sites such as Google and Facebook. A total of seven individuals contributed to an average rating of 2.4 out of five stars on Facebook, and the only written comment critiqued the strict staff.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Two loved ones provided survey responses to Rehabs.com, which reflected mild satisfaction overall. One, polled on 15 metrics measuring accommodations and treatment, awarded ratings ranging from two stars for the effectiveness of treatment to five for family participation and options in counseling approaches. The loved one identified "patient care" as a strength, rating the staff's level of training and experience four stars. However, they reported that the facility's weakness was its ineffectiveness, even while rating NDSH's capacity to treat co-occurring addiction and psychiatric disorders a relatively high four stars. The second loved one offered fewer responses, agreeing with the other's mediocre opinion of the hospital's affordability, but disagreeing about the quality of family involvement.

In contrast, family members on Google, where the center received just two stars overall based on four reviews, were highly dissatisfied.[2] One of these individuals cited insufficient attention and care for the patient's needs while in treatment.

FINANCING

According to the NDSH website, commercial insurance and Medicaid are accepted and a sliding fee scale is available for individuals without adequate coverage. It is among the 42 percent of facilities to accepted Medicaid and among the 37 percent to offer a sliding scale fee in the state of North Dakota.

CONCLUSION

According to its own website, the hospital actively takes steps to incorporate new treatment methodologies and account for more patients. A recent meeting for increasing capabilities to provide services for people with Autism spectrum disorders is one such example.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/North-Dakota-State-Hospital/120830741438284
[2] GoogleReviews
