ABOUT NASH UNC HEALTH CARE - COASTAL PLAIN HOSPITAL

Coastal Plain Hospital, in eastern North Carolina, provides short-term, inpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse, acute and chronic mental illnesses, and co-occurring disorders. The facility accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions. It is among 26 substance abuse treatment facilities in the state that provide hospital inpatient medical detoxification. Coastal Plain is part of Nash UNC Health Care, which also operates a general hospital and several other facilities in Rocky Mount.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Patients may be admitted 24/7, beginning with a counselor assessment on-site. Treatment is intended to be short-term only, with an average length of stay five to 10 days. To facilitate both the most effective treatment while in the hospital and supportive aftercare, the staff encourages coordination with each client’s existing medical and mental health providers.

Although the facility’s website provides few details regarding treatment modalities for substance use disorders, individualized treatment plans are emphasized. Group therapy, structured recreation, and education support the client’s psychological, social, and physical recovery.

To treat patients struggling with a primary or co-occurring mental health condition, the facility may utilize pharmacological intervention, ongoing medication management, group and individual counseling sessions, coping skills workshops, and therapeutic recreation.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Coastal Plain Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission. The treatment team, led by a physician medical director, includes psychiatrists, registered nurses, licensed social workers, certified counselors, recreational therapists, and mental health specialists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Coastal Plain Hospital is a 50-bed facility located on the south side of the Nash General Hospital campus. The environment is clinical, and patients wear hospital garments while in treatment. Smoking on-site is not allowed; however smoking cessation support, including nicotine patches, are available. Scheduled visitation times are offered, but clients may not access cell phones or other electronic devices during their stay.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole former patient polled by Rehabs.com to date provided mixed feedback, positive on some metrics, moderately favorable on most, and negative on others. The former patient gave three-star ratings for the facility's cleanliness, co-occurring disorder treatment, counseling options, the amount of family participation, and the level of staff experience and training. In all, this alum simply wrote: “It was decent.”

On Google, Coastal Plain received split feedback: two perfect five-star ratings and two two-star ratings, which averaged 3.5 out of five stars based on four reviews (alumni, loved one). [1] The positive reviewer who left commentary characterized staff as caring, helpful, and accurate in diagnosis. The negative reviewers reported inadequate medical support during detox and poor family communication policy.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing also provided splits opinions, though offered three- and four-star ratings for the staff's level of experience and training. One loved one gave a perfect five-star rating for the level of family participation, while the other gave this metric two stars.

Both loved ones agreed there was not enough time for treatment and activities to “keep [clients] busy all day,” as well as not enough flexibility for visitation. The more critical reviewer wrote: “They only keep patient for 7 days and then release them to go back to what they were misusing before admission.”

FINANCING

The cost of treatment varies by service and an assessment is free. Coastal Plain accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. Nash also offers some financial assistance.

[1] GoogleReview
