ABOUT NEW YORK STATE OFFICE OF MENTAL HEALTH - PILGRIM PSYCHIATRIC CENTER (NYS-OMH-PPC)

Conveniently located less than a mile off the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood, N.Y., the New York State Office of Mental Health’s Pilgrim Psychiatric Center (PPC) provides residential and outpatient care options for adults seeking treatment for psychiatric and behavioral disorders. It is one of 94 state-owned and operated mental health facilities. Holding accreditation with the Joint Commission through September of 2019, the state-run hospital has nearly 300 beds across a dozen different residential units, four separate outpatient centers, and several mobile crisis teams throughout Suffolk County. Detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment process at PPC focuses on stabilizing clients and teaching them the skills that they need to live with a persistent mental illness. Treatment is available for substance abuse, as well as transitional facilities to help clients steadily transition into the appropriate care situation. Clients often begin in the residential program, and are referred from other medical practices.

PCC includes a number of teams, facilities, and branches to provide a wide coverage area. The organization has an on-site, 17-bed crisis residence, as well as 11 community-based, supervised residences - ranging from 10 to 24 beds. This makes it a large organization especially among the 110 (13 percent) of New York facilities offering 24-hour residential treatment options.

Specialty services in the residential program include group and private counseling for substance abuse, weekly dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups for those with borderline personality disorder, an intensive short-term treatment unit (ITU) focused on stabilization, and an aptly-titled Bridger program that helps bridge the gap between residential and outpatient treatment. There’s even a specialized program for clients with water addiction and hyponatremia, which is a life-threatening decrease in sodium levels.

Pilgrim Psychiatric Center offers a range of family support services across its various sites. These include monthly meetings under a Family Advisory Board, a Family and Friends Center, and biannual “orientation” nights that support and educate loved one’s in their family member’s recovery. In New York, only about 71 percent of facilities offer family-focused treatments.

A range of alternative treatment options is available. Alternative treatment programs offer clients the opportunity for animal-assisted therapy and activities, a multi-sensory therapy room, music therapy, horticulture, and for putting to practice skills they’ve learned at a model apartment. Each client has an individualized treatment process that incorporates alternative treatment options based on their interests and needs. Geriatric-specific treatment is available for adults, ages 65 and older.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Professionals employed at the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center have training and experience across a variety of disciplines such as psychiatry, nursing, psychology, social work, nutrition and dietary services, pharmacology, and more. The facilities are coordinated by administrative staff members that have extensive experience with treatment centers and can provide assistance with housing and other needs. The facility is one of the 344 (40.8 percent) in the state that are accredited by the Joint Commission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

PCC has an extensive network of facilities that create a combined 290 beds across its 12 different residential units. Rooms are either private or semi-private. Each unit also has a living room, program room, activity area, and dining room. Pilgrim’s state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Center is host to a swimming pool, bowling alley, gym, game room, library, and a large auditorium used for presentations and conferences.

Visitation hours are Monday through Friday, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on weekends and holidays, from 10 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni or affiliated friends or family members.

On Google, the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center has an average rating of 3.2 out of five stars from 26 Google reviewers.[1] While some reviewers provided positive feedback about some of the staff members, others wrote how the security staff is “condescending and not helpful one bit.”

"Staff are responsible and respectful.
