<p><strong>ABOUT LONG ISLAND TEEN CHALLENGE</strong></p> <p>Long Island Teen Challenge, located in West Babylon, N.Y., is one of New York’s <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY17.pdf" target="_blank">214 (25.4 percent) residential facilities</a> . It offers <strong>residential treatment to teens and young adult with addiction to drugs and alcohol.</strong> The Long Island region operates <strong>12 residential facilities</strong> which are each gender-specific. Teen Challenge is a <strong>faith-based network of treatment centers</strong> located throughout the United States which utilizes <strong>intervention and evangelism</strong>. The organization was founded in 1958. Detox is not available.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>The facility’s treatment program follows a <strong>faith-based approach</strong> to provide treatment for adult men and women, ages 18 and up. The residential program is <strong>12 months long</strong> making it one of <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY17.pdf" target="_blank">166 (19.7 percent) long-term facilities in New York</a>. </p> <p>The program includes supervision 24 hours per day in a community-based program. The program teaches participants about conflict resolution skills, Christian leadership skills, life skills, and physical health. Clients are assigned a work detail and may participate in vocational training.</p> <p>A typical day at the facility starts very early and includes Bible devotions, discipleship training, and work projects followed by meals, chapel services, and Bible reading prior to lights out for the night. <strong>Recreational activities</strong> are also interspersed into the daily routines, including arts programming. An annual retreat is scheduled at Lake Champion. </p> <p>Each client is assigned a <strong>personal mentor</strong> who has also graduated from the program and has been trained in the rehabilitation curriculum taught at the facility. In New York, only <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY17.pdf" target="_blank">413 (49 percent) facilities</a> use mentoring in their services. Clients also work through Teen Challenge International’s Group Studies for New Christians along with other biblical studies. Tutoring is available for those who haven’t completed their GED.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The treatment team includes interns and staff who are graduates of the residential program and who have been trained in recovery mentoring. The mentoring department is run by a <strong>licensed mental health counselor</strong> who obtained her master’s and doctorate degrees in counseling.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>The Long Island Teen Challenge residential treatment program has nine men’s homes, three women’s homes, and two churches. Family participation, phone calls, and mail are allowed after 21 days in the program. After 60 and 90 days, clients receive a pass to leave the program for eight hours. After 120 days, clients are eligible for weekend passes. The program does not allow sex offenders into the program.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong> </p> <p>At the time of this writing, one alum polled by Rehabs.com about the Long Island Teen Challenge gave mixed feedback. They gave four out of five stars for its cleanliness and five stars for the level of staff experience. However, they did indicate that the facility was not adequately equipped or staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders. The alum noted that a strength of the facility was that all staff members are graduates of the program themselves. However, five negative reviews indicated problems with management and overall treatment effectiveness. "These people are not what they say. Beware!!!" On Glassdoor, the facility has one three-star rating and one one-star rating. The facility is willing to work with individuals on a case by case basis regarding financing.
