ABOUT SOUTH BEACH ADDICTIONS TREATMENT

Located within walking distance to Staten Island’s South Beach, the South Beach Addiction Treatment Center (SBATC) has been in operation since 1975. SBATC provides short term residential treatment for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse. it is one of 57 short term residential programs in New York.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at this inpatient program is designed for individuals with a specific set of circumstances. To be considered eligible for treatment, prospective clients must either need 24-hour supervision, be currently residing in an environment that is not conducive to recovery, or have “physical or mental complications and co-morbidities requiring medical management.” Length of stay varies from two to six weeks based on need.

Following their entry into the addiction treatment center and subsequent evaluation, men and women are assigned to a personal counselor for regularly scheduled individual counseling. They will also meet for counseling in group settings, be joined by family members, and have opportunity to attend educational lectures, experiential groups, and self-help meetings. Topic-specific groups address common challenges like anger management, stress management, and relapse prevention, as well as gender-sensitive topics. It is part if the 71.3 percent of facilities in the state to offer HIV education. Therapeutic activities are also on schedule.

Successful program graduates may receive aftercare support at off-site self-help meetings and sober community events.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at the SBATC includes physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and certified/licensed addiction counselors. The program is one of 89 in New York to be CARF-accredited and is licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The inpatient facility can serve up to 30 men and women at a time. It features a day room and a small cooking space for clients. It is a tobacco-free campus.

Rehabs.com survey respondents had conflicting perspectives on the center: one gave four out of five stars for both the accommodations and meals, though another left two stars for these categories. A third reviewer simply called it “clean."

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

By and large, feedback provided by two alumni is positive. Reviewer J.K.B. described their counselor as “extremely qualified” and left five-star ratings for a variety of metrics including staff such as the respect shown to clients’ preferences, availability, and their experience and training.

In their anonymous report to Rehabs.com, another alum gave the center high marks for its inclusion of families, its visitor policies, and for the effectiveness of treatment itself.

Reviews on third party sites are less positive. On Google 69 reviewers gave an average rating of 1.9 out of five stars.[1] Numerous reviewers gave one star ratings and complained about the quality of the staff. Many gave one star ratings and made reference to the 1983 documentary Children Of Darkness in which it is mentioned that patients at the hospital died under suspicious circumstances.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

An anonymous family member had a couple of complaints. Though they found the “strict rules” a program strength, this reviewer claimed that the center was understaffed and unfair in keeping clients somewhat isolated. “They should allow patients family to visit and allow patients access to phone,” they told Rehabs.com.

FINANCING

Per its official website, the SBATC does not deny an individual access to services due to their inability to pay.

[1] GoogleReviews
