Editorial Review

ABOUT EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE RESOURCE SERVICES, INC (EARS)

Since 1986, Employee Assistance Resource Services, also known as EARS Recovery Program, has provided medically supervised outpatient treatment to adolescents and adults struggling with substance abuse. This is one of New York's only 70 (7.6 percent) outpatient-based treatment facilities to offer detoxification services. The Suffolk County, Long Island facility's, current focus is on medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opiate addictions. Ambulatory detox services are also available to assist with withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

EARS approaches addiction as a disease, according to the facility's website. All clients receive individualized treatment plans, which draw from a number of modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and hypnotherapy. Medication-assisted therapy options include Suboxone, Subutex, and Vivitrol, in combination with counseling. In New York, the facility is among the 42.8 percent of facilities to administer Vivitrol.

Among the specialized tracks offered are DWI-related treatment to meet court requirements and an intensive outpatient program, which consists of individual, group, and family counseling sessions.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The founder and president of this facility is a clinical psychologist with training in hypnosis; his son, the clinical director, is a master's level social worker. Also on staff are psychiatrists and certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Although Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former clients as of this writing, a trend of mixed to negative opinions was revealed on secondary sites. On the facility's CiteHealth page, for example, 16 reviewers produced an average rating of 2.9 out of five stars.[1] About a third of the reviewers represented the staff as unfriendly or judgmental and the program as unorganized with too many requirements. However, positive comments highlighted the resulting life improvements following treatment and three individuals noted favorably that EARS programs required discipline."My family relations & work performance has also improved," wrote one alum.

Three Yelp reviewers concurred with these overall trends, providing two one-star ratings and a perfect five-star rating.[2] Two reported long waits and characterized staff as unsympathetic. However, one reviewer noted that groups were welcoming and treatment team members were patient. Three users on Yelp's "not recommended" page each gave just one star, also citing difficulties with staff, insurance policies, and facility cleanliness.[3] "The facility is old, musty and decrepit..." T.R. wrote in a representative negative review: "Con artists for sure."

Feedback was unanimously negative on Google to date, where the center earned only one star from all five reviewers.[4] "The staff are unprofessional and unhelpful. The facility doesn't take Medicaid because they committed Medicaid fraud," C.C. commented in a representative post.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date reported participating in family groups and events, writing, "Lots of love and emotional support." High ratings were given for most surveyed metrics, including four out of five stars for both counseling options and the level of staff support. Despite the low rating of one star for holistic offerings and two stars for leisure activities, this loved one provided a four-star rating overall for treatment effectiveness.

FINANCING

Most major insurance plans are accepted, according to the facility's website. Additionally, the center's CiteHealth page indicates that both Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. In New York, the facility is among the 45.5 percent of facilities to accept Medicare.

[1] http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/new-york/cities/smithtown/employee-assistance-resource-services-inc#reviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/e-a-r-s-smithtown
[3] https://www.yelp.com/notrecommendedreviews/e-a-r-s-smithtown
[4] GoogleReviews
