HealthAlliance offers two levels of care for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. First Step is an inpatient program at the Kingston, N.Y., hospital's Mary's Avenue Campus, providing medically supervised detoxification and short-term rehab services.

Bridge Back offers full-day, standard outpatient programming at two HealthAlliance locations, as well as intensive outpatient programming (IOP), which is offered by about 27 percent of New York treatment facilities.

Each treatment program integrates medical and 12-step care and provides access to dual diagnosis programming to address co-occurring disorders. Services are prioritized for individuals who are HIV-positive, pregnant, in a methadone program, or experiencing other special needs. HealthAlliance is part of the Westchester Medical Center (WMC) Health Network.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The HealthAlliance website emphasizes a non-judgmental, disease approach to substance abuse and chemical dependency treatment. Individuals requiring inpatient care begin at the emergency department of the Broadway Campus and are then transported to the First Step facility.

During detox and the short-term, intensive relapse prevention inpatient program, patients receive medical care, 24-hour nursing, individual and group therapy, and collaborative aftercare planning, which includes referrals to local services. Gender-based groups and 12-step meetings are offered.

HealthAlliance offers a range of outpatient options, collectively known as the Bridge Back Program. The hospital's full-day program is medically supervised and incorporates nutrition and health education, art therapy, and several theme- and special needs-based small groups to the mix of treatment modalities offered during detox and inpatient rehab. Clients can also work with case managers and receive liaison support for criminal justice system obligations.

Bridge Back also offers intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents, individual counseling, and family therapy and education. Adolescent programming takes a harm-reduction approach.

Aftercare services, including individual and group counseling sessions, are available to individuals who complete a Bridge Back Program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Beyond medical and nursing staff on the inpatient unit, there is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff. Two former First Step clients polled by Rehabs.com rated the staff's level of training and experience four out of five stars and a third granted three stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

HealthAlliance offers a hospital-based setting, and patients have access to medical and nursing attention during inpatient care. According to the facility's website, the detox unit accommodates up to 10 individuals. Outpatient services are offered in Kingston and Saugerties, and a methadone maintenance clinic in Kingston.

The four First Step alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility an average rating of two out of five stars for the facility's cleanliness. Faring significantly less favorably were ratings of just one star from all three polled on exercise and leisure activities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni gave the facility mediocre reviews. While three of the four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that the staff were friendly and supportive, the four together gave HealthAlliance an average rating of just two out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness. None of the four indicated that they would recommend the program to others.

In addition to citing staff as a strength, alumni also reported that fellow client interaction was helpful in the short-term rehab process. Data reflects a tightly focused program, however, with ratings of just one or two stars from all three individuals polled on metrics measuring holistic therapy offerings, counseling options, and family participation. Reviews mentioned "limited activities" or "one size fits all" as weak areas.

On Google, the Broadway location has an average rating of 2.8 out of five stars based on 73 reviews, and the Mary's Avenue campus has an average rating of three out of five stars based on 15 reviews.[1] [2] Clients of the general hospital shared many of the same sentiments as alumni polled by Rehabs.com. None referenced substance abuse treatment, and the main complaint from the smaller set of reviews was long wait-times for ER or physician follow-up services.

Broadway campus reviewers complaints were more focused on costs and billing concerns, and a small majority were complimentary of the staff and the care received.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, WMC Health - HeathAlliance works with most major insurance companies, including Aetna, Cigna, and MultiCare.
