ABOUT NEW DAWN

Located at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, N.Y., New Dawn provides inpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance use disorder. Medically monitored detox is available on-site through the hospital's emergency department. St. Joseph's Hospital is part of Arnot Health, a diverse network of healthcare providers and facilities located throughout New York State.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Arnot Health Service's website states that New Dawn's holistic approach uses one-on-one and group counseling to uncover the physical, social and psychological needs of each individual. All clients receive a comprehensive assessment and an individualized treatment plan upon admission. In addition to 24-hour care, services include individual therapy, group counseling, relapse prevention, 12-step facilitation, and addiction education.

Though there is no information available online regarding length of treatment, an alum surveyed by Rehabs.com indicated that their treatment lasted between 15 and 29 days.

Options for aftercare include a weekly support group for graduates and on-site Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings. A women-only NA class is also offered. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 64.4 percent of treatment facilities in New York offer programs specifically tailored to adult women.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

While there is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, two individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the staff's level of training and experience both gave four out of five-star ratings.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, one individual surveyed by Rehabs.com indicated that they had one roommate. The three individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly four- and five-star ratings to relevant metrics, including the facility's cleanliness. However, all three gave only two- or three-star ratings to its exercise and leisure options.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

V.S., the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date, gave New Dawn a positive review* awarding the facility four or five out of five stars for meals and nutrition, cleanliness, inclusion of alternative approaches, and the quality of the lead counselor. The alum also indicated that they received the level of counseling promised by the program prior to entry, and that the counseling options empowered them to take charge of their behavior and daily routine. "I know there are facilities with a lot of fluff in them this was not the case at new dawn," V.S. wrote.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave New Dawn mixed feedback. In particular, the anonymous reviewers disagreed on the treatment effectiveness, meals and nutrition, and affordability of the program.

However, both reviewers noted that there were not enough staff members and that the care was not personalized, but gave the facility high ratings of four or five out of five stars for family participation and treatment of co-occurring disorders. They also agreed that the staff "truly cared," as one reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

New Dawn is one of 382 (45.4 percent) of treatment facilities in New York that accept Medicare and one of 737 (87.5 percent) that accept Medicaid. New Dawn also accepts third-party insurance payments.
