ABOUT NEW YORK THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES, INC. - SERENDIPITY II

For more than 30 years, New York Therapeutic Communities, Inc. (NYTC) has provided treatment support to men and women struggling with substance use disorders. The organization operates separate men’s and women’s long-term residential programs, Serendipity I and Serendipity II. Serendipity II, the women’s center in Brooklyn, serves adult women involved in the criminal justice system, including those in transition from incarceration.

Of New York’s 842 addiction treatment facilities, just under 20 percent offer long-term residential care. NYTC also operates a Brooklyn outpatient clinic and in-prison treatment programs. The facility is also among the 39.7 of N.Y. facilities to offer specialized programming for individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

While most residents of New York Therapeutic Communities Serendipity II are court-mandated, walk-in clients are also accepted. The 12-month program follows a therapeutic community model, prioritizing whole-person recovery in stages.

Both peer support and self-help practices are central to Serendipity’s therapeutic approach, complemented by group therapy and workshops and weekly individual counseling sessions. Topics addressed include relapse prevention, anger management, parenting skills, and job readiness. The program also incorporates psych-drama, acupuncture, and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) into programming.

Following a year as residents, clients are encouraged to participate in a six-month aftercare outpatient program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Most counselors on Serendipity II's treatment team are in recovery and are, according to the facility's website, “qualified healthcare providers.”

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This 16-bed facility is located in a mixed residential and commercial neighborhood, within walking distance of shops. NYTC’s Serendipity II residence includes a computer lab, fitness equipment room, beauty salon, designated family visitation areas, and outdoor patios, according to the organization’s website.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole alum of Serendipity II polled to date by Rehabs.com rated their likelihood to recommend the program to others five out of five stars. Ratings for other metrics evaluated depicted treatment limited in scope but helpful (two stars apiece for counseling options and holistic offerings, though five stars for overall effectiveness). Offering four stars for the amount of family participation and five stars for the staff's level of experience and training, the alum highlighted “good counselors always there for you,” but felt the facility was understaffed.

CiteHealth also had one alum review, although the former client did not stay through the program. She reported that there were inadequate activities and “unhelpful staff.”[1] While no women reviewed Serendipity II on Google, six men contributed to an average rating of 4.2 out of five for NYTC’s Serendipity I facility.[2]

FINANCING

The Serendipity program is primarily funded by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. Admission requires clients to be Medicaid eligible.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/new-york/cities/brooklyn/serendipity-based-at-944-bedford-avenue#reviews
