<p><strong>ABOUT SOUTH SHORE ASSOCIATION FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING, INC.</strong></p> <p>Operating in Baldwin, N.Y., a community on Long Island, South Shore Association for Independent Living, Inc. (SAIL) provides outpatient-based treatment services, case management, and supportive housing for adults struggling with a primary psychiatric disorder. The community-based treatment provider is also equipped to treat individuals with co-occurring substance abuse disorders. The goal of SAIL is to provide the necessary services and support to promote independent living among individuals with a history of mental and/or behavioral challenges.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Upon entry into the program, clients may undergo an initial psychiatric assessment to determine the specific needs of each individual. SAIL provides two primary services: an ACT program and supportive housing. ACT is an acronym for Assertive Community Treatment. One of the primary goals of an ACT program is to prevent psychiatric hospitalization among individuals who may have a history of hospitalization. </p> <p>Clients participating in the organization's ACT program may attend supportive counseling sessions, psychoeducational classes,, and wellness workshops that relate to specific life areas, such as improving self-esteem, vocational rehabilitation, and enhancing coping skills. Clients also receive ongoing psychiatric evaluations and medication management. If applicable, the client may also attend specialized classes regarding substance abuse and relapse prevention.</p> <p>The frequency of ACT participation ranges from daily sessions to two times per week, depending on the needs of the individual. As a client progress towards their recovery goals, the individual may meet with clinicians less frequently. </p> <p>In addition to its ACT program, SAIL also provides comprehensive case management to help support individuals within the community and promote independent living. Case management services may include linkages and referrals to vocational training, educational opportunities, and self-help meetings within the community. </p> <p>Along with its case management and treatment services, SAIL also operates a number of supportive housing facilities, with varying degrees of supervision and support. The homes are designed to help clients live more independently, and residents do have a level of autonomy. However, the facilities are supervised, and residents have easy access to psychiatric attentions through SAIL's clinical services. </p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>Shore Association for Independent Living, Inc.'s ACT program is facilitated by a team comprised of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, employment specialists, peer specialists and substance abuse specialists.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>SAIL operates a number of facilities that offer varying degrees of support, depending on the needs of the residents.</p> <p>four Congregate Residences home facilities in Nassau County. Residents reside in private or shared bedrooms in a "group setting."Three residences accommodate 10 individuals, while one residence can accommodation 11. One supportive facility, the Rockville Centre Residence, houses young adults (ages 18 to 30).</p> <p>SAIL's Apartment Treatment Program <strong>combines supportive, transitional housing with the services of the ACT program</strong>. Staff visit the clients on a regular basis per week to provide support and facilitate skills training. Supportive Housing is SAIL's most supervised residence program, designed for individuals with severe and/or persistent mental illness. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>The sole alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing had mixed opinions of the facility. While the survey appreciated staff, they felt that treatment was not individualized. Out of five stars, they also gave perfect five-star ratings for the amount of family participation and the facility's discharge planning, but gave a two-star rating for the facility's overall cleanliness and upkeep. "Not enough one on one time with doctors," the alum wrote. "You are just a card board cut out and everybody is the same."</p> <p>Secondary sources revealed a more positive consensus among alumni. On the organization's Facebook page, which SAIL can manage, <strong>six individuals gave the facility an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars</strong>. <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> However, reviewer did not elaborate on their personal experience. </p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>According to the facility's website, most clients pay for housing and treatment through Medicaid.
