<p><strong>ABOUT BEACON CENTER</strong></p> <p>Beacon Center, located in Amherst, N.Y., offers an <strong>intensive outpatient program (IOP), outpatient counseling, and sober living homes for adolescents and adults</strong> seeking treatment for alcohol and substance abuse, as well as <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders</a>. The facility has been in existence since 1990, currently has a total of eight locations, and is one of New York’s largest woman-owned business. </p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Beacon Center offers a variety treatment options including an <strong>opiate-specific addiction program</strong>, the Compass Program, which is designed for individuals with co-occurring mental illness, general outpatient counseling, and <strong>gender-specific outpatient programming</strong>. The facility is one of New York’s 238 treatment facilities with <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY16.pdf" target="_blank">programs specifically for adolescents</a>, and one of 313 facilities with with a program for <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY16.pdf" target="_blank">young adults</a>. .</p> <p>The opiate addiction treatment program is based on a combination of <strong>evidence-based counseling and medication-assisted therapy (MAT)</strong> using buprenorphine (Suboxone). Suboxone is used in <a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/2016_NSSATS.pdf" target="_blank">25.6% of the U.S. treatment facilities</a> to reduce the impact of withdrawal symptoms so that clients can work on their recovery. MAT is closely monitored by a physician-led medical team. Throughout treatment, clients focus on <strong>long-term behavioral change</strong>.</p> <p>The Compass Program is focused on adults <strong>seeking treatment for addiction as well as mental illness</strong>. The program works with clients to address obstacles that may be encountered while recovering from addiction while learning how their mental health and substance abuse interact. </p> <p>Clients participating in outpatient counseling receive a <strong>complete evaluation to determine their individual needs</strong> prior to the start of counseling. Clients must also participate in random urine drug tests and agree to receive a complete physical assessment conducted by a registered nurse.</p> <p>The <strong>adolescent program</strong> offers alcohol or other drug use education on how to live a lifestyle free of substances, how to <strong>deal with peer pressure</strong>, and improve self-esteem.</p> <p>Beacon Center is one of New York's <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY16.pdf" target="_blank">577 facilities with specific programs for women</a> and 572 facilities with <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NY16.pdf" target="_blank">gender-specific programs for men</a>. The gender-specific programs are designed to cater to the <strong>unique needs of men and women</strong> and explore the ways that society may influence each gender’s path to recovery. </p> <p>For example, the women’s program explores issues of sexuality, such as rape, childhood sexual abuse, prostitution and abortion, while the men’s program works through issues including relationships, domestic violence, and expressing emotions.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The treatment team at Beacon Center includes physicians, mental health counselors, chemical dependency counselors, and social workers. The team leaders have extensive experience with clients in rehab, including the use of Suboxone in treatments. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong> </p> <p>At the time of this writing, there has been one alum polled by Rehabs.com about this location of Beacon Center. The former client, G.P., gave the facility a negative review, including one out of five stars for its holistic offerings, family participation, affordability, and counseling options. “The faculty treats you as if you are not as good as them. All they want is to continue collecting your insurance money and will keep you there as long as possible. The staff comes and goes more frequently than the patients," the alum wrote.</p> <p>On Yelp, the Beacon Center has a pair of one out of five-star reviews.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> Bob described how the facility was “connected with the court system. Lots of money is made here.” Bob also indicated that staff members lacked the recovery experience that’s needed. Shiva wrote how it is “Such a scam” that doesn’t provide a “legitimate service.”</p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong> </p> <p>At the time of this writing, the one loved one polled by Rehabs.com about the Beacon Center also gave the facility a critical review. He gave two out of five stars for its level of family participation and counseling options, as well as one out of five stars for affordability. “Loved one came out worse than went in,” they wrote.</p> <p><strong>WHAT STAFF SAY</strong></p> <p>On Indeed, the Beacon Center earned an average of <strong>3.3 out of five stars</strong> from 21 reviews.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> Staff members indicated how it was a good place to “gain experience” and how they learned “many transferable skills.” However, some staff members felt they were “treated poorly” by management.</p> <p>On Glassdoor, the facility has an average of 2.6 out of five stars from four reviews to date.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-3"><sup>[3]</sup></a></small> They described “terrible benefits” and echoed concerns on Indeed about the high turnover rate.</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>According to HealthGrove, the facility accepts Medicaid, state insurance (other than Medicaid), <a href="http://treatment-facilities.healthgrove.com/l/12378/Beacon-Center" target="_blank">private health insurance</a>, and offers payment assistance in the form of sliding scale fees.
