Editorial Review

ABOUT HOSPITALITY HOUSE

Hospitality House is one of New York’s 596 private, non-profit facilities and has more than 40 years of experience. Hospitality House provides intensive residential treatment to adult men seeking treatment for substance abuse disorders. Services are administered out of a renovated building on a corner in downtown Albany, N.Y. across from a church and an elementary school. Detox is not offered on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Hospitality House accepts clients with a wide range of care needs including those with managed co-occurirng disorders, and clients with extensive legal backgrounds. Individuals undergo assessments, which include yearly physical exams, to determine the right course of action as well as potential financial assistance from the state. Those with co-occurring mental health disorders such as mild depression and anxiety may be admitted, but the facility does not take those with more intensive mental illnesses disorders. Each resident is under 24-hour supervision and may be randomly screened for drug use.

Holistic treatment and the 12-Steps are the foundations of recovery at Hospitality House. The 12-Steps program is used in 74.5 percent of the facilities in New York and offers options for individual, group, and continuing care. Clients focus on therapy while learning a wide range of sober living skills.

Clients must work their way through four phases of treatment. Most phases take at least two months to complete and cannot be attained without a written request. That makes Hospitality House one of New York’s 166 long-term treatment facilities. As clients ascend, they are allowed to participate in more activities and are given more responsibilities. Those who enter the facility exhibiting extreme negativity are placed on Phase Zero with no privileges. Once clients have moved past the initial phases, they are required to enroll in school or job training. Only 52.3 percent of the facilities in New York include vocational training and services in the treatment process.

In this therapeutic community model, higher phases give residents the opportunity to be a role model for new clients, participate in outside Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Gamblers’ Anonymous meetings, as well as utilize group therapy. Topics for groups include anger management, sexuality, and relationships, including parenting classes for clients with children.

There are also specific groups for those experiencing a heroin dependency and other specific drugs. clients can also attend groups that provide treatments that are tailored to the needs of clients that experienced severe trauma. There are specialized services available to help clients with legal needs, medication management, and family and individual counseling.

Education, both for substance abuse and academics, is an important part of the treatment process. While in treatment, clients must also attain their GED, if applicable. This requires at least 10 hours of classes per week. Once completed, clients begin the discharge process.

Discharge planning heavily involves the client and typically involves a transition to one of 10 sober living homes in the community. Relapse prevention and other continuing care services may be part of aftercare.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Hospitality House employs master’s level psychotherapists and a master’s level art therapist. Staff also includes various specialists, counselors, nurses, licensed clinical social workers, and both medical and clinical directors. Clients that have completed the first phase of treatment or the entire course of treatment may serve as mentors for other clients.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Hospitality House uses an extensive list of recreational therapy options including hiking, ping pong, sports, movie nights, and access to the internet and gaming systems. The facility also includes classrooms, group meeting spaces, and individual counseling spaces. Clients have 24/7 access to medical and counseling staff members. Meals are provided on site, as well as academic services.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

On the facility’s unofficial Facebook page, 15 reviews averaged 4.5 out of five stars.[1] Many wrote that the program saved their lives, and Mark added, “i'm very grateful for the staff and clients that were with me and I have learned a lot to keep my life on track. I have 11years clean and still going.” However, in a more recent review, Nicholas wrote how the facility had changed: “This place used to be a good program..now everyone does whatever they want, there getting high in there, and the staff is terrible.”

On Google, Hospitality House TC Inc has a one, a four, and a five out of five star review to date.[2] None of the reviews had any written commentary.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

A single family member has provided feedback to Rehabs.com about the Hospitality House at the time of this writing. The anonymous reviewer gave four out of five stars for connectivity and family participation, but seemed to find the facility lacking in all other categories: just two out of five stars went towards treatment effectiveness, holistic options, facility cleanliness, and leisure activities. They wrote: “it is [old] and not up to par compared to places that cost a lot of money.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

One staff member provided feedback about Hospitality House to Rehabs.com to date.
