Editorial Review

ABOUT BARNABAS HEALTH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

RWJBarnabas Health is a major healthcare network, operating 11 hospitals, four children's hospitals, and numerous other services in the state of New Jersey. The agency's behavioral health network offers departments at many of these hospitals, though the main Behavioral Health Center is located four miles north of downtown Toms River, near the state's coastline.

The center offers inpatient and outpatient care for adults struggling with a range of behavioral health disorders, including substance use disorder and dual diagnosis. Specialty care is available for geriatrics, and in both the adult and the geriatric brackets, the center accepts involuntary clients as well as voluntary ones. It's one of 12 hospital-based inpatient programs in New Jersey that treats addiction.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Behavioral health services at Barnabas Health are founded on two core principles: first, that treatment must provide clients with tools that will help them in the long-term, not just get them through a short-term crisis. And second, that the network's medical departments are always on-hand to complement behavioral health services.

All clients typically begin treatment with a biopsychosocial assessment to help determine their needs and the most appropriate level of care. For individuals with severe, disruptive psychiatric illness and chemical dependency, the hospital runs both voluntary and involuntary inpatient units. Treatment is short-term, with the goals of stabilizing the client and preparing them for discharge or the next level of treatment.

Clients stepping down from inpatient care, or who don't need 24-hour supervision, are encouraged to attend Stepping Stones, an intensive outpatient program (IOP). The program runs for three and a half hours every weekday morning (though clients might attend anywhere between three and five sessions a week, depending on their need), and consists mainly of group therapy, plus one weekly session of individual therapy. IOPs are available at 65.4 percent of New Jersey-based rehabs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Barnabas Health’s behavioral staff consists of board-certified psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, advanced practical nurses and nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), certified addiction counselors, and nutrition counselors. All three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it four out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, but the three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility two four-star ratings and a five-star rating for its cleanliness. The hospital's exercise and leisure offerings received more mixed feedback, with one, two, and four stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed feedback, noting that they would neither recommend nor not recommend the Behavioral Health Center. Both reviewers noted a lack of recreational activities but highlighted other strengths of the facility’s programming. "They had a great caffeteria, great staff, great meetings not entertainment like others or gym," one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review, while fellow alum Michelle praised the center's treatment for dual diagnosis, but added: "No recreation activities."

Both reviewers gave the facility low ratings of one and two stars for its holistic offerings, and mediocre ratings of two and three stars for its family participation. They were split on the facility's counseling options, which received a three-star rating and a five-star rating.

The facility has mostly negative feedback on secondary sites, with average ratings of 2.5 stars based on 43 reviews on Google and 1.4 stars based on seven reviews on Yelp (including "not recommended" reviews), plus four one-star ratings on YellowPages.com.[1] [2] [3]

The reviewers repeatedly complained of uncaring treatment from staff and a sense that the facility was more like a prison than a treatment center. "THE STAFF AND DOCTOR WERE TERRIBLE," Maureen wrote in a representative review on Google. Only a small handful of former clients reported experiences like John, who wrote on Google: "They were a great help to me . Like anything else you get what you put into it . The staff was kind a caring."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

"Communication and caring was a strength. Effectiveness was a weakness," was the appraisal of the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, who noted that his family member relapsed a few months after treatment. Nonetheless, they gave the facility four stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its holistic offerings, family participation, counseling options, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

Numerous family members have taken to secondary sites to air their grievances with the Behavioral Health Center, which include inappropriate use of medication, poor communication with families, and a sense that people were kept at the facility unnecessarily. "The doctor there was not good with the family members and did not contact us once! There were 5-6 medication changes in 3 weeks!" Amber wrote in a representative comment on YellowPages.com.

FINANCING

Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center works with Medicare, Medicaid, and numerous private insurers (accepted at 25.9, 60.8, and 64.5 percent of New Jersey facilities, respectively). Financial assistance is available for clients who quality. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility a three-star, a four-star, and a five-star rating.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/saint-barnabas-behavioral-health-center-toms-river?osq=Barnabas+Health+Behavioral+Health+Center
[3] https://www.yellowpages.com/toms-river-nj/mip/barnabas-behavioral-health-center-479779059?lid=1001783001269
