ABOUT HIGH FOCUS CENTERS

Founded 20 years ago, High Focus Centers operates seven outpatient psychiatric and substance abuse facilities for adults and adolescents in northern and central New Jersey. The Parsippany facility is located less than 20 miles northwest of Newark and serves the Morris County area. It offers outpatient treatment for those struggling with substance abuse issues as well as co-occurring mental health issues. Medical detox is not available on-site. Complimentary transport to and from the treatment center is available if required.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with an initial assessment that typically takes an hour and a half. Adolescent clients must be accompanied by a parent for intake.

According to its website, High Focus centers offers individualized, evidence-based programs rooted in the 12-Step model of recovery. All programs include education and individual and group therapy, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Family therapy may also be recommended, particularly among adolescents. Holistic offerings include mindfulness, yoga, and pet therapy. Professional tracks are available as well.

The cornerstone of treatment is intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) lasting 10 to 12 weeks, which run for three hours per day, between two and five days per week, depending on the client’s treatment track and level of need.

There are also psychiatric IOPS for both adults and adolescents. Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) lasting three to four weeks are available for those struggling with psychiatric problems only. High Focus is one of 13 percent of OP facilities nationwide to offer partial hospitalization (page 19).

According to the facility’s website, all clients leave with a comprehensive discharge plan that includes appointments with therapists and psychiatrists where appropriate.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to High Focus’s website, organizational staff includes an MD, clinical psychologists, registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed drug counselors. It’s unclear which of these individuals are stationed at the Parsippany facility in particular.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has not received any reviews directly from alumni of this facility. Secondary sites yielded mixed coverage, skewing negatively. On Google, the facility averaged 2.3 out of five stars, from nineteen reviewers to date.[1] Joe, one of the two positive Google reviewers to leave a comment, wrote: “Outstanding! I was highly focused.. Great staff.” But more than one negative review cited problems with staff and finances — specifically unexpected items on the bill, and a feeling that, in Tammi’s words: “Their only concern is money!!” Another reviewer, Behere, complained about a “very boring and depressing” program primarily based on lectures and handouts.

Six alumni on CiteHealth also wrote negative reviews, rating the facility only one or two out of five stars.[2] One anonymous alum wrote in a representative review: “This center lacks individualized care and made me feel worse than I was before going. The staff only really pays attention to you if you throw a temper tantrum."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the two reviews from loved ones received by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, one is mostly positive and the other mostly negative. The negative reviewer rated the facility three out of five stars for its staff support and the overall quality of its addiction counseling, but one star in areas such as its mental health counseling, holistic offerings, and family involvement. “Just because someone is arrested for possessing something does not mean there is an addiction problem, or even a morality issue,” the negative reviewer wrote.

The other reviewer, however, gave the facility three or four stars in almost all the evaluated areas of treatment, including treatment for co-occurring disorders, counseling options, and family participation.

On CiteHealth, the facility has attracted four one-star reviews from loved ones, most of whom cited bad communication, lack of proper care, and profit seeking. “Staff did not individualize or plan care with client. They completed paperwork to get more money and notwithstanding client,” one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review.

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Glassdoor, one current employee rated High Focus only one out of five stars,[3] while on Indeed a former employee rated it three out of five stars.[4] The Glassdoor reviewer wrote that, although the location was easily accessible, the atmosphere was problematic: "Toxic dynamic between staff. Poor quality of care given to patients. Cookie cutter treatment approach. Not a safe place for high risk patients."

FINANCING

The initial assessment for all programs costs $150. According to the facility’s website, High Focus Centers is in-network for most major insurers including Aetna, Cigna, United, and Value Options. It also accepts private payment but not Medicare or Medicaid.

[1] https://goo.gl/y9oEEk
[2] http://citehealth.com/reviews/18307
[3] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/High-Focus-Centers-Parsippany-Reviews-EIIE925697.0,18IL.19,29_IC1126931.htm
[4] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/High-Focus-Center/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Parsippany%2C+NJ
