Editorial Review

ABOUT NEWARK RENAISSANCE HOUSE

Newark Renaissance House, located in Newark, N.J., offers residential and intensive outpatient addiction treatment to adolescents, pregnant women, and women with children. The facility also offers a developmental nursery program and an infant program for children of women receiving treatment.

Founded in 1975, Newark Renaissance House is a private nonprofit, community-based organization. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 50.9 percent of rehabs in New Jersey are private nonprofits. The same survey indicates that 61.9 percent of rehabs in the state offer programs specifically tailored for adult women, 34 percent for adolescents, and 29.9 percent for pregnant or postpartum women.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s treatment program follows the 12-step method. The adult intensive outpatient (IOP) and residential programs are for pregnant women and mothers of children up to five years old. Clients in each program receive individual group, and family substance use counseling, parenting and life skills training, case management, and educational and vocational assessments.

Women in the residential program also have access to an on-site pediatrician and family medical practitioner as well as transportation services. According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 47.4 percent of rehabs in New Jersey offer clients transportation assistance. Each of these adult programs offer early intervention, early childhood education, and mental health services to children of women enrolled in treatment through the organization’s Developmental Nursery Program.

The adolescent residential program is open to boys ages 14 to 18 years old who are not in need of detoxification. The average length of treatment in the program is three to six months. The adolescent day treatment, outpatient, and co-occurring intensive outpatient programs accept both boys and girls.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding treatment staff. Out of five stars, the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a one- and four-star rating for the staff's experience and training.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by Newark Renaissance House regarding living arrangements and related offerings. However, of the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com rated to date, one rated the facility’s accommodations and amenities four stars while the other rated it one star. Both gave the facility one star for cleanliness and exercise and leisure options.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave conflicting accounts of their experiences. The first alum, S.A., gave the facility one star for nearly all metrics evaluated, including counseling options, treatment of co-occurring disorders, and connectivity. Though she described her psychologist as “incredible,” most of her commentary was highly negative. “We lived like animals...just one of the worst experience of my life," S.A. wrote.

The other alum gave a more neutral review, though it skewed positive. Though the anonymous reviewer echoed S.A. with low ratings for many evaluated metrics, connectivity, counseling options, and 12-step facilitation, they gave higher marks to other metrics, such as treatment of co-occurring disorders and overall treatment effectiveness. “It truly made me keep my head straight so I would never have to subject myself to living that way again,” they wrote.

Feedback on secondary review sites was similarly mixed. On Google, the facility has two one-star ratings and a three out of five-star rating.[1] On the facility's official Facebook page, which staff can manage, reviews were more positive; over 40 people contributed to an 3.9 out of five-star average rating.[2]

Positive commentary on Facebook tended to focus on the treatment effectiveness as well as the quality of the staff and the 12-step programming. However, on Google, Christina wrote: This place is absolutely horrible. the staff they have are so untrained and hardly know what they are doing..."

WHAT STAFF SAY

Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from staff members, on secondary review sites, staff offered mostly positive feedback of aspects that directly relate to client experience. On Indeed, 22 individuals gave the facility an average rating of 3.1 out of five stars. Several former employees praised the qualifications of their fellow staff members, while others lauded the treatment effectiveness.[3] One anonymous former employee wrote in a representative review that the facility "is a great place to work with helping others with getting there life back on track an helping them get they kids back the women need help."

A single employee echoed this sentiment on Glassdoor, writing: "The work they do for people to better their life is great."[4]

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided by Newark Renaissance House regarding costs.
