Editorial Review

ABOUT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA ADDICTION TREATMENT PROGRAM

Volunteers of America Addiction Treatment Program provides support services for New Jersey inmates reintegrating into the community. The Addiction Treatment Program in Camden, N.J., is a 72-bed residential program that offers both short and long-term care for adult men, with an accompanying outpatient program. All clients must be inmates/recently released inmates that are making a transition back into the community. It is one of four programs in New Jersey run by the state government. Detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Prospective clients undergo an initial screening and assessment process to ensure they’re an appropriate fit for the program. Those with co-occurring mental health disorders are also appropriate for the Addiction Treatment Program. ATP is one of 230 (66.9 percent) of New Jersey treatment facilities that include a comprehensive mental health assessment and diagnosis into their assessment process.

Though treatment plans are individualized, programming itself is made up of daily group therapies. In these groups, clients participate in evidence-based treatments like motivational enhancement therapy (MET), SMART Recovery, and trauma-informed care. They also participate in health education and educational and vocational counseling, which is only available at 43 percent of New Jersey facilities.

There’s also an outpatient Re-Entry Substance Abuse Program for high-risk individuals who are on parole. The program similarly provides evidence-based treatments.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

All clients receive oversight, both during and after the completion of treatment, from a substance abuse manager. The clinical staff is comprised of an ASAM-certified medical director, nurses, and certified alcohol and drug counselors (CADCs).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility has 72-beds available. There are individual counseling rooms as well as larger classrooms for group activities.

In their anonymous Rehabs.com survey response, an alum referred to the facility as “Very secure” and gave three out of five stars for its meals and accommodations.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

D.C., the sole respondent of a Rehabs.com survey about this Volunteers of America location as of this writing, was quite critical of the program. They claimed it was co-ed (and therefore “not particularly comfortable for women”) and that it offered no private counseling. The alum gave one out of five stars for its holistic offerings, connectivity, family participation, and the level of staff experience.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Though Rehabs.com has not yet received feedback from loved ones, on Google, the program has an average rating of three out of five stars from six individuals, two parents reported incidents of theft.[1] “They stole all his Stuff plus ID SS card Birth Certificate all his clothes,” wrote D.D. “DON’T TRUST THIS PLACE.” And Robert called the staff “very unprofessional,” and wrote: “and they steal just as a warning.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Indeed, Volunteers of America as a whole earned an average of 3.6 out of five stars from over 2,000 reviews to date.[2] Forty-four of the reviews were for this location.
