ABOUT VAMC MANCHESTER - PORTSMOUTH VA COMMUNITY-BASED OUTPATIENT CLINIC

Located on the Pease Air National Guard Base in Portsmouth, N.H., the VAMC Manchester CBOC (Community-Based Outpatient Clinic) offers a variety of mental health and substance abuse treatment options for veterans and active-duty personnel.

While all veterans are encouraged to enroll, the facility specializes in treating servicemen and women who have served for at least 24 continuous months or a full period of active duty. Detox services are not offered on-site, however, staff can refer clients to appropriate facilities as necessary.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

VAMC Manchester CBOC's treatment approach at this facility takes into account a variety of factors particular to veterans. The facility offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), traditional outpatient program (OP), as well as opioid replacement therapy. The facility is among the nine New Hampshire facilities to provide specialized programming for veterans.

VAMC Manchester’s recovery program is based on many different treatment modalities that address substance use and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is offered in the form of individual psychotherapy, group therapy, and medication management as necessary. Evidence-based, goal-oriented therapies used at this facility include dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), prolonged exposure therapy, and a variety of cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) to address depression, sleep, chronic pain, and related issues.

A range of specialized group therapy options are offered in topics such as anger management, better sleep, women’s wellness, stress reduction, anxiety management, PTSD skills, and Seeking Safety. VAMC also encourages family involvement and offers family and marriage counseling to help couples recover from the damage of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Family counseling services are offered in 71.9% of all treatment facilities in New Hampshire.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility’s staff includes psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and a psychopharmacologist, as well as clinical social workers, psychologists, and a licensed marriage and family therapist.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The feedback from two anonymous loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing was generally negative. Out of five stars, the two loved ones gave two stars and three stars for the likelihood they'd recommend the facility to others.

A spouse of a loved one who entered treatment for addiction gave VAMC a rating of one star for the quality of addiction treatment and three stars for the staff's qualifications. “No effort to involve family... not the correct type of facility for pain addiction,” the anonymous loved one wrote.

FINANCING

Clients who have service-related conditions can receive care for free, but the VA must bill private insurance for conditions that are not related to veterans’ service. Veterans who do not receive VA disability or pension payments must complete a financial assessment at the time of enrollment to determine if they qualify for free VA health care. Veterans with private health insurance may use their coverage to supplement their VA benefits.

CONCLUSION

In February of 2018, the VA appointed Alfred Montoya Jr., a U.S. Air Force veteran, as the new Medical Director of Manchester VA Medical Center. Montoya was the former Medical Director of White River Junction VA Medical Center. “My work has been to bring people together to realize all that is possible for Veterans,” said Montoya in a press release.
