<p><strong>ABOUT HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA - SHANNON WEST HOMELESS YOUTH CENTER</strong></p> <p>Located in Las Vegas, Nev., HELP of Southern Nevada’s Shannon West Homeless Youth Center <strong>provides residential and outpatient treatment to teens and young adults (16 to 24)</strong> who are homeless, are at risk of becoming homeless, or are escaping an abusive environment. In addition to other services, the center offers treatment for substance misuse and <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring</a> disorders.</p> <p>HELP of Southern Nevada is a nonprofit organization, which make up 53.2 percent of treatment facilities in Nevada, according to a <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NV17.pdf" target="_blank">2017 SAMHSA survey</a>.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Treatment begins with an initial assessment to determine the appropriate type of care and to establish a better understanding of the client's background. The center offers a variety of services to clients, including <strong>substance misuse counseling, treatment for co-occurring disorders</strong>, intensive case management, educational assessment, and vocational training, among others. </p> <p>All treatment methods include counseling and <strong>life-skills training</strong>. Referrals to mental health treatment facilities can also be provided by the facility’s counseling staff. In Nevada, the center is among the 18 facilities to offer <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NV17.pdf" target="_blank">specialized programming for adolescents</a>. </p> <p>Additionally, clients are offered training in skills needed to live independently and to maintain their sobriety. These courses include <strong>anger management</strong>, social skills development, money management, and problem solving. The facility's outpatient program focuses on substance abuse disorders and co-occurring disorders.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>According to the organization's website, the Youth Center is certified to provide Level III inpatient residential, Level I outpatient drug and alcohol treatment, and Level I co-occurring treatment by the State of Nevada Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Agency. Staff members may include counselors, case managers, and social workers. </p> <p>A <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/NV17.pdf" target="_blank">2017 SAMHSA survey</a> indicates that in Nevada 72.7 percent of treatment facilities are certified by the state's substance abuse agency and 26 percent of accredited by the state's mental health department. Clients have 24/7 access to medical staff.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>According to the center's website, the Youth Center can <strong>house up to 65 clients</strong>. The center consists of a residential building, a multipurpose facility, and an outdoor recreation area. The residents live in <strong>dorm-style rooms</strong>. There is also an ADA-compliant room available for individuals that qualify.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from alumni, <strong>reviews on third-party sites were mostly positive</strong>. (Reviews on third-party sites may not be specifically referencing the Youth Center's substance misuse program.) On its unofficial Facebook page, 14 alumni all rated the Youth Center four or five stars out of five.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> On Google, the center received an average rating of <strong>four out of five stars</strong> from 187 reviewers<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small></p> <p>Positive feedback tended to <strong>emphasize the compassion of the staff</strong> and effectiveness of programming. In a representative review on Google, alum Starr wrote: "This place saved my life and while I am currently staying here it's saving many others. Staff are your friends they are you're family they listen they talk they bond."</p> <p>Though most reviews were positive, four alumni on Google gave one -star ratings. Feedback from these alumni tended to focus on mistreatment by staff and several described their experience as "being effectively jailed," as one alum described it.</p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>The sole loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave a mixed review. The anonymous loved one gave four- or five-star ratings to the quality of treatment for co-occurring disorders, the staff's level of training and experience, and the facility’s admission and discharge procedures. However, they gave just one out of five stars for its <a href="https://www.recovery.org/forums/discussion/7265/what-is-holistic-treatment-and-how-can-it-help" target="_blank">holistic offerings</a>, its connectivity/visitor policy, family participation, and cleanliness.</p> <p>Two loved ones left reviews on Facebook, one of whom gave a one-star rating and the other a five-star rating. Lois, the five-star reviewer, wrote: "The young people are very appreciative of the help they receive from the center, community and volunteers."</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>There is currently no information provided on the center’s website regarding costs. However, the single individual surveyed by Rehabs.com to date rated affordability one out of five stars, though they indicated that it was worth the cost.</p> <p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p> <p>In 2017, HELP of Southern Nevada opened the new <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-las-vegas/las-vegas-center-for-homeless-youth-celebrates-opening-video/" target="_blank">Shannon West Homeless Youth Center</a> in Las Vegas.
