ABOUT DESERT PARKWAY BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE HOSPITAL

Located in the center of Las Vegas, Desert Parkway Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is an acute, private psychiatric hospital and one of 13 facilities operated by Signature Healthcare. The facility offers crisis intervention, short-term inpatient care, and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents (ages 13 to 17) struggling with a primary psychiatric disorder, chemical dependency, or co-occurring difficulties. The facility also provides specialized programs for military veterans and active-duty personnel, as well as seniors. If necessary, medical detoxification services are available on-site to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, patients undergo an initial medical evaluation and behavioral health assessment. If detoxification or psychiatric stabilization is necessary, patients may be referred to short-term inpatient care, which is designed to rapidly stabilize the patient and refer them to a less-intensive level of care.

Inpatient programming for chemical dependency involves a highly-structured schedule of individual, family, and group psychotherapy that helps patients to identify and process any underlying factors that may contribute to addictive behavior. Patients also attend educational classes on the cycle of addiction, as well as participate in stress management and coping skill-building workshops. According to the facility’s website, patients are also introduced to the 12-step model of recovery.

Individuals with a primary psychiatric illness or co-occurring mental health disorder also participate in family and group therapy sessions, as well as receive ongoing medication management. In addition, patients participate in a range of recreational and expressive therapies to facilitate open communication and improve socialization skills. The facility’s website states that the goal of inpatient care is to help “patients develop the necessary coping skills to deal with the issues that led them to hospitalization.”

The specialized inpatient program for military personnel, Hope for Heroes, provides programming that addresses issues common among veterans and active-duty military. Through counseling sessions and educational classes, Hope for Heroes addresses posttraumatic stress disorders, combat-related stress, suicidal and homicidal ideation, depression, and substance abuse disorders. Similar to traditional treatment programs, the Transitions Program for seniors is tailored to meet the physical, emotional, psychological needs of the elderly. Transitions is available at three levels of care: inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient.

Utilized as both a stand-alone program for individuals who do not require hospitalization and a “step-down” treatment after inpatient care, Desert Parkway’s intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are available to treat chemical dependency, primary psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring disorders. According to the facility’s website, IOP typically lasts two to three weeks, depending on the needs of the patient.

IOP for chemical dependency involves relapse prevention classes, therapeutic activities, stress management workshops, as well as group, individual, and family psychotherapy. Mental health outpatient programs also involve therapy sessions, as well as ongoing medication management.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Desert Parkway Behavioral Healthcare Hospital employs a multidisciplinary staff comprised of psychiatrists, internists, registered nurses, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), licensed social workers, activity therapists, dietitians, and an ancillary nursing team.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to the facility’s website, the inpatient treatment center offers a “warm, nurturing and safe environment.” Patients share spacious double-occupancy bedrooms, and the facility features comfortable common areas and a large on-site gym. As a psychiatric hospital, patients have 24-hour access to medical and nursing attention.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Although Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni reviews at the time of this writing, secondary sources revealed polarized opinions among former patients. On Google, 42 individuals gave the facility an average rating of 2.4 out of five stars.[1] While some former patients felt the facility had an effective staff, others felt that the facility relied too heavily on medicating patients and not enough on empathizing with them. Rebecca, a representative reviewer, wrote, "Im not sure if they really can help anyone but if you like your meds (not many do) but they love giving them." Alum Tony added, "No compassion and care for the patients." However, “They were attentive and compassionate, encouraging steps for recovery without being pushy,” felt Joel, a four-star reviewer.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, a parent of a patient, also had mixed opinions concerning the facility. Out of five stars, the survey respondent offered a perfect five-star rating for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders, though submitted more moderate three-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options, the amount of family participation, and the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. Although the loved one felt that a medication regimen was proving effective, they reported issues regarding communicating with the facility.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive employee feedback to date, however, employee reviews on Indeed revealed overall employee satisfaction.[2] Citing co-workers and management as facility strengths, 10 employees awarded the facility an average rating of 3.5 out of five stars. “I could not ask for a better team. Management is supportive and understanding and is willing to help in any way possible,” a representative reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

Although information concerning the cost of treatment is scarce, the facility’s website states that the hospital contracts with “most managed care companies.”

[1] https://goo.gl/uVJYgs
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Desert-Parkway-Behavioral-Healthcare-Hospital/reviews
