Editorial Review

ABOUT CHINA SPRING YOUTH CAMP

China Spring Youth Camp is long-term residential treatment program for court-ordered clients aged 12 to 18. Located in along the Nevada–California border in Gardnerville, Nev., the center accepts male and female mid-level offenders who are struggling with substance misuse, co-occurring disorders, or other behavioral issues. The camp is one of only two treatment facilities in Nevada that is state-run, according to a 2016 SAMHSA survey.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to their website, the treatment program is primarily intended to stop the progression of any behavioral problems and foster resiliency and wellbeing, by providing knowledge, living skills, and healthy experiences. The program lasts a minimum of six months. Only 19.5 percent of treatment facilities in the U.S. have residential programs lasting more than 30 days.

The camp uses the Youth Development System, under which treatment is divided into four stages: orientation, adjustment, transition, and honors. Per the facility's website, this system is designed to grant increased responsibilities and privileges, maintain motivation, and increase self-esteem as the resident progresses through the program.

Treatment for substance use disorders aims to address the emotional, cognitive, physical, social, and moral aspects of treatment. Treatment modalities include gender-specific programsas well as a program designed to help parents learn behavior management techniques. During their stay, all residents participate in an educational program provided by the Douglas County School District.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The camp employs 43 staff members, more than half of whom are youth counselors or mentors who work directly with residents. The substance use treatment team is multidisciplinary, though precise credentials are not provided. The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center three out of five stars for the level of support received from its staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Residents sleep in dormitories on an unlocked campus since the center's stated philosophy is to promote an atmosphere of trust and keep residents in the least-restrictive environment possible. Some residents participate in a wilderness program, which involves activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and rafting. According to the camp's website, all youth receive free meals as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Though Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from alumni, three alumni rated the camp on Google, [1] offering a perfect five-star rating, four-star rating, and one-star rating. No reviewer left additional commentary.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a mostly negative review and would not recommend this facility. "Not structured enough," the anonymous parent wrote, indicating that the center did not benefit their son. The reviewer gave the facility low to neutral ratings for most metrics surveyed, including three stars for family involvement and counseling, two stars for the overall quality of addiction and mental health treatment, and one star for holistic offerings.

FINANCING

Drug and alcohol programming is supported by grants, and the camp's website also suggested that private insurance is accepted. The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center three stars for its overall cost..

[1] GoogleReviews
