ABOUT STEPHEN CENTER

Founded in 1983, the Stephen Center is a nonprofit that serves homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha, Neb. Among the center's offerings are an emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, transitional-living facilities, and residential and outpatient services for low-income and homeless individuals who are struggling with addiction or dual diagnosis.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Addiction treatment is provided under a program called "HERO": Health, Empowerment, Responsibility, and Opportunity. In general, treatment is built around therapy, counseling, motivational approaches, and evidence-based practices. Twelve-step programs are used to support the process, but are not foundational to the program. Families are encouraged to participate in treatment, and medication management approaches are used when appropriate.

The most intensive level of addiction programming, residential treatment, involves staying at a dedicated facility, the John Hoich Center for Recovery. Residential treatment typically lasts 30 to 45 days; once they're ready, clients step down to intensive outpatient programming (IOP) while staying in a structured environment โ often, one of the Stephen Center's transitional living facilities. The IOP lasts 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the client's needs, while general outpatient care lasts six to eight weeks. On both programs, clients receive a combination of individual and group counseling. There's also a dedicated IOP for youth aged 13 to 19.

Following outpatient treatment, many clients enter a relapse prevention stage, living in a transitional living facility, maintaining employment, and attending at least one outpatient group per week. There's a 45-day minimum stay for this phase of treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Treatment is conducted by a multidisciplinary team that includes licensed mental health professionals, licensed addiction counselors, and case managers. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the Stephen Center five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The John Hoich building for inpatient treatment can accommodate 32 men and 32 women at a time. There is currently no further information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the Stephen Center five stars for its cleanliness, accommodations, and meals, and two stars for its exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend the Stephen Center. They praised the "dedication of staff and using the principles of alcoholics annoymous," and gave the facility five stars for its family participation and ability to treat co-occurring disorders and four stars for its counseling options, but just three stars for its treatment effectiveness and two stars for its holistic offerings.

The Stephen Center's HERO program had mostly positive reviews on secondary sites at the time of this writing: a four-star average rating based on 41 reviews on Google, and two five-star ratings on Facebook, where the facility can manage its own page.[1] [2] The minority of negative reviews contained some recurring complaints: namely, about the strict rules and difficulties with individual staff members. "This place sucks! Too many rules. Thwy refuse to treat us like we are grown adults!" J.W. wrote in one representative review on Google; "Some of the staff is not caring or helpful. It's cramped, and there are rules about laying down/sleeping during the day, regardless of physical or mental health issues," F.N. wrote in another.

However, the majority of reviews expressed gratitude to the program for the change it wrought in their life, often particularly thanking the staff. "It saved my life. The people here truly care about everyone who walks in those doors," S.C. wrote in a representative review on Google.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Secondary sites yielded exclusively positive reviews of the Stephen Center from staff at the time of this writing: two five-star reviews left on Indeed.com โ though it should be noted that one of these applied to working at the thrift store, not the treatment facility.[3] "I generally enjoy going into work. I love the management at the Stephen Center. I also love working with the shelter clients," wrote the employee of the treatment facility.

FINANCING

Residential treatment costs $775/month: $400 for treatment and $375 for accommodations. Fees for outpatient services are based on a sliding scale, and are provided free of charge to some clients, such as residents of emergency shelters. Substance use evaluations costs $190 if conducted by a licensed staff member, and $25 if conducted by an intern, under supervision. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the Stephen Center five stars for its affordability.

[1] https://goo.gl/9UeiJ6
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/StephenCenterOmaha/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Stephen-Center/reviews
