Editorial Review

ABOUT MISSOULA URBAN INDIAN HEALTH CENTER

Located in the community of Missoula, Mont., Missoula Urban Indian Health Center provides a range of treatment services for the Native American community of Missoula and the surrounding area. It is one of seven facilities in the state coordinated by a tribal governance organization.

The facility offers traditional outpatient and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for individuals seeking treatment for chemical dependency, as well as psychiatric healthcare services. Although the facility does not provide on-site detoxification services, clinicians can make client referrals to appropriate programs in the area.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before beginning treatment, clients participate in an initial substance abuse assessment to determine an appropriate level of care. Nearly all of Montana’s facilities use a similar assessment method to guide their treatment. The facility’s traditional outpatient program involves up to eight hours of programming each week, while the intensive outpatient program (IOP) may consist of up to 30 hours of weekly treatment sessions. However, the IOP generally involves nine hours of weekly groups and one hour of individual therapy.

Missoula Urban Indian Health Center’s treatment programs for chemical dependency combines evidence-based treatment approaches with culturally-relevant philosophies and practices. For example, the center utilizes a Twelve Steps for Native Americans treatment model, which blends traditional 12-step tenants with Native American beliefs.

Along with an introduction to the 12-step model of recovery, clients also participate in both group and individual counseling sessions. The 12-Step model is used in 52 of Montana’s facilities. Counseling sessions help facilitate free expression, provide peer support, and improve self-awareness while introducing techniques and skills for relapse prevention.

Along with treatment for chemical dependency, the facility also provides psychiatric screenings and culturally-relevant mental health therapy. In the state, 77.1 percent of Montana’s facilities offer mental health assessments as a part of their treatment options.

According to the facility’s website, individual and group counseling sessions that address mental health concerns are designed to provide “cultural relevance regarding communication, perception, thought process, self-expression and esteem and plan for safety and stability.” Counseling sessions are also designed to support Native Americans transitioning and adjusting to an urban lifestyle.

Although Missoula Urban Indian Health Center specializes in providing culturally-relevant treatment for Native Americans, the facility does accept clients without Native American descent. Transportation and childcare services may be available to clients actively receiving treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s staff is comprised of tribal-affiliated specialists familiar with both Native American values and traditions and evidence-based treatment methods. These specialists include a pharmacist, fitness and health coaches, behavioral health specialists, tobacco counselors, and community resource managers.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback to date.
