ABOUT NEXT STEP - RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

Located in the community of Staples in central Minn., Next Step - Residential Services provides a comprehensive, long-term residential program for adolescent males (13 to 18) with substance abuse behavioral issues. The facility also offers extended and transitional care for clients residing in the Staples area. Next Step does not accept prospective clients who require medical detox, and residents must be stable upon admission. Next Step is also associated with ANEWAY, a related program under the same ownership and management structure. ANEWAY offers a range of similar and distinct services than Next Step with a focus on providing supplemental support when possible.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The admission process at Next Step - Residential Services begins with a phone interview with an admissions counselor. Clients undergo a biopsychosocial assessment to determine their specific needs. Other admissions requirements may be specified by the facility as needed. Clients must be sober at the time of admission according to drug testing, and have completed a detox program.

The facility uses a biopsychosocial model of treatment focusing on addressing substance abuse in every aspect of the client’s life. Evidence-based treatments are combined with 12-step and educational training to create treatments. Treatment includes traditional therapies as well as involvement in 12-step organizations like alcoholics anonymous (AA). Family participation is also an important part of treatment. Clients must commit to at least 45 days of primary treatment, as well as 90 days of extended care, if applicable. The facility partners with Staples Motley School District to provide educational resources and allow clients to continue their education.

Unique to Next Step, its H.E.A.R.T. Program promotes healthy lifestyle changes by exposing residents to a range of leisure and recreational activities. H.E.A.R.T., an acronym for Health, Effort, Artistry, Respect, and Teamwork, is a merit-based recreational program. Through the program, residents participate in a range of seasonal recreational activities, including camping, skiing, hiking, and other outdoor activities that help promote sober fun.

Once a client completes residential treatment, Next Step encourages clients to transition into extended care. Clients in extended care continue to receive ongoing assessments and support. In addition, Next Step’s extended care program offers educational services, such as G.E.D. preparedness courses and post-secondary options, through a local learning center. Clients enrolled in transitional care may also continue to participate in the recreational H.E.A.R.T Program at no additional cost.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Next Step’s residential program is overseen by an executive director, a doctoral-level psychologists and counselor, while day-to-day programming is facilitated by a team of behavioral health technicians. The facility is CRF Accredited by the Todd County Department of Health.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Next Step’s residential program is held in a homelike facility, with older adolescents and younger adolescents housed in separate areas of the facility. Images of the residence indicated simple yet comfortable double-occupancy bedrooms. While residing in the home, clients are responsible for household chores and the general upkeep of the facility. Family visitations and family counseling is held on Sundays. As the client progresses in treatment, typically after eight to 10 weeks, the individual may receive overnight passes to visit with family off-site.

Along with the recreational activities of the H.E.A.R.T. Program, Next Step also schedules seasonal outings, such as visits to a nearby skate park, bowling nights, camping trips, horseback riding, and professional sporting events.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing was critical of the facility.

Out of five stars, the survey respondent gave two stars for the level of family participation, the inclusion of exercise and leisure activities, and the ease of communication with loved ones during treatment.
