ABOUT MAYO CLINIC IN ROCHESTER, MN

Established in 1972, the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minn., helps individuals and families struggling with alcoholism, drug abuse, and co-occurring disorders. Today, the center runs one of just 104 (29.2 percent) of residential programs in the state (and one of 241 (67.7 percent) outpatient programs), serving adults ages 18 and older through its Addiction Services Department.

Individuals enrolled in a Mayo Clinic program may also be eligible to participate in clinical trials, thereby contributing to research developments and breakthroughs in the treatment of the disease of addiction.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be eligible for treatment at Mayo Clinic, prospective clients must either call the center to request an assessment or be referred by their local health care provider. Following the assessment, clinicians work alongside clients to create an individualized treatment plan that combines counseling with medication and goal setting. Mayo Clinic also has capacity to treat individuals battling depression, bipolar disorder, and other co-occurring disorders.

In the Intensive Addiction Program, clients spend 30 days in group and individual therapy with a counselor or psychiatrist, education, and personal time. Evenings offer opportunity for recreation as well as attendance at self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Clients gain from research-based modalities like motivational enhancement, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), spiritual guidance, and mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Anti-craving medication may also be available.

There’s an Outpatient Addiction Program that offers half-day addiction services, available as both a step-down from a higher level of care or directly. The four-week program consists of individual and group therapy, lab testing, medication management, and ongoing nursing assessments.

Families and other loved ones can attend Family Days, available every other week. Each program at Mayo Clinic concludes with a three-step aftercare program as well as a post-treatment maintenance plan and psychiatric or psychological follow-up care.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Addiction services are provided in the Generose Building at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Participants of the Intensive Addiction program reside in private rooms in the facility’s hospital-like setting.

Residents have access to wi-fi and may use personal cell phones and computers during free time. Treatment occurs on an open unit, and clients are able to leave the grounds at first with other patients and eventually on their own.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Mayo Clinic includes addiction psychiatrists, addiction specialists, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, licensed clinical social workers, and registered nurses.

The Mayo Clinic also employs an internal medicine specialist, a recreational therapist, a dietitian, a nicotine dependence counselor, a chaplain, and a neuropsychologist. The clinic boasts a staff-to-client ratio of 1:5.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The nine alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date shared mixed feedback on their experiences at the Mayo Clinic. While some clients described the staff as professional, caring and competent, others were dissatisfied with the treatment they received. Still, alumni shared above-average ratings across several key areas:

Staff Level of Training & Experience: 4.3/5
Cleanliness: 3.5/5
Family Participation: 3.3/5
Counseling Options: 3.5/5

Most alumni described the counselors as excellent, while several found treatment expensive. “Great staff, great accommodations, lots of individual attention...the only problem is that it is cost prohibitive for many people,” one reviewer noted.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

By and large, the six loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date shared details of positive experiences. Five out of six indicated that they’d recommend Mayo Clinic to others.

Staff Level of Training & Experience: 4.5/5
Cleanliness: 4.8/5
Family Participation: 4.8/5
Counseling Options: 3.3/5

In their written feedback, loved ones expressed gratitude for being able to participate in the process and that the facility was clean. Several, however, noted a lack of exercise options and need for more outside speakers. “Very good doctors, very busy schedule, very comfortable setting,” wrote one in a representative statement.

FINANCING

The Mayo Clinic accepts major private health insurance plans and is one of just 109 (30.6 percent) centers in the state of Minnesota to accept Medicare, one of 187 (52.5 percent) to accept Medicaid.

Prospective clients are encouraged to contact the center with additional questions regarding the cost of treatment.
