<p><strong>ABOUT NORTHERN LAKES COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH - TRAVERSE HOUSE</strong></p> <p>A service of Northern Lakes Community Mental Health (NLCMH), a Michigan-based treatment provider, Traverse House is <strong>a supportive living program that serves individuals struggling with persistent and/or severe psychiatric disorders</strong>. Located in Traverse City, the community-based, psychosocial rehabilitation program is designed to help residents <strong>improve independent living skills</strong> and enhance self-esteem.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Before admission, potential residents may participate in an initial assessment to ensure the residential program offers an appropriate level of care. Although Traverse House is designed for individuals with severe and/or persistent mental health disorders, the program does require a level of functioning to be able to <strong>participate in the supportive employment</strong> element of the program. The facility's website states: "Taking responsibility for completing tasks is important and vital to the clubhouse structure."</p> <p>While residing in the home, residents may choose a "work unit" that they'd like to participate in. Traverse House offers three units: <strong>a kitchen unit, a cafe unit, and a clerical unit</strong>. The kitchen unit operates on weekdays and is responsible for preparing and serving lunch and dinner daily, as well a meal planning, <strong>managing weekly food budgets</strong>, and grocery shopping. Also open on weekdays, the cafe unit runs an on-site cafe, and participants sell snacks and refreshments. They are responsible for the general upkeep of the cafe and ordering food.</p> <p>In addition, the Traverse House operates a daily newsletter for the house, which is run by the clerical unit. Residents learn <strong>basic computer and clerical skills</strong>, such as filing, data entry, telephone operation, and community outreach. The goal of each unit is to build employable skills, <strong>build self-esteem</strong>, improve socialization skills. </p> <p>The Traverse House also enables members to work within the community in the <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/how-employers-can-create-a-recovery-friendly-workplace/" target="_blank">transitional employment program</a>. Along with assistance in creating resumes, improving interviewing skills, and applications, staff assists the member in their job searches. If placement is possible, members are allowed to be <strong>employed outside of the home for between six and nine months</strong>.
