ABOUT NEW OAKLAND CHILD-ADOLESCENT & FAMILY CENTER FACE TO FACE PROGRAM

New Oakland Child-Adolescent & Family Center Face To Face Program, located in Livonia, Mich., provides outpatient-based care for children, adolescents, and adults struggling with mental illness. New Oakland describes their Face to Face Program as being the primary service that sets the facility apart from other more traditional mental health treatment centers.

New Oakland was first founded in 1991 with a goal of providing therapeutic alternatives to inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations, especially for children and adolescents, making it one of the state's only 100 (21.9 percent) with this specialized programming for youth.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Similar to a hospital-based treatment program, Face to Face offers intensive treatment to clients including medical care. However, the facility describes the day program as taking place in a warmer and more nurturing office-based setting. Clients attend treatment for six hours each day and sleep at home at night. In Michigan, the facility is among the 8.3 percent of facilities to provide a partial hospitalization program (PHP).

Clients are separated into age-specific groups as they participate in their day groups. The frequency of the sessions depends on the severity of the client’s circumstances and ranges from three to five days per week. Typically, clients complete a total of seven to 10 days of treatment. The program utilizes staff from multiple disciplines as they assess, intervene, and empower clients and their families to work towards resolution of their presenting problem.

Clients are provided breakfast, snack, and lunch which is included in the cost of the program. Transportation to and from the program may be available at low or no cost for clients depending on their insurance coverage.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and social workers. The sole Rehabs.com survey respondent to date provided five out of five stars for the center staff's level of experience and training.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com had yet to receive feedback from former clients of this facility at the time of this writing, secondary sites revealed below-average ratings. On the facility’s Google page, an average rating of 2.2 out of five stars was produced based on 25 total reviews.[1] However, these reviews were regarding the organization as a whole, not specifically the Face to Face program.

Reviewers tended to express dissatisfaction with the quality of care received by the therapists and doctors. One alum of the Face to Face program, E.J., gave the program a one-star rating. She indicated that she had a very negative with the employees in the program. “When I went I was verbally abused for not wanting to talk about a traumatic experience I'd had recently. Then, when I was put into your "Face to Face" program, I was abused, and beaten down, not to mention by men, lied to, and traumatized because of all this. I'm now afraid to go seek any help because of what happened here,” she wrote.

WHAT FAMILY & FRIENDS SAY

At the time of this writing, there has been one friend or family member polled by Rehabs.com. She also agreed that family and loved ones were able to participate in treatment through facility programming.

“The program was really good at identifying with young kids. They did a good job engaging the kids and giving them age appropriate tasks and activities which helped them deal with their issues," loved one wrote.

Two loved ones on Google who shared experiences putting their children in this program both remarked upon high costs of treatment at this facility.[1] Additionally, nine Yelp reviewers all gave one-star ratings to date.[2] These loved ones also expressed concerns with the center's affordability, in addition to citing issues with uninformed and unprofessional staff. "When I approached one of the social workers about a setback my daughter was having, she didn't seem equipped to offer any suggestions for how my daughter could manage her issues," H.K. summarized.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive staff feedback to date, 26 current and former employees on Glassdoor generated a 3.6 out of five-star average rating.[3] In a representative positive review, one staff wrote, "Our team was dedicated, supportive and committed to providing good care."
