Editorial Review

ABOUT COOLEY DICKINSON BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT

Cooley Dickinson Behavioral Health Unit, located in Northampton, Mass., offers residential treatment to adults seeking treatment for mental disorders. CD-BHU operates as a department of Cooley Dickinson Hospital and is located inside the hospital. It is also one of 55 hospital-based residential treatment facilities in the state. Detox is not available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be admitted to CD-BHU, clients must complete a crisis evaluation. A team of mental health specialists complete the evaluation and enroll clients in the appropriate services. The team can also provide referrals for other facilities or treatment methods if necessary. In Massachusetts, just under 33 percent of facilities have crisis intervention and evaluation teams that can evaluate clients.

The treatment program at CD-BHU focuses on a community support model of treatment. Rather than solely focusing on individual care, the facility places an emphasis on group and family treatment methods. The intent is to create a supportive environment where clients can get continuous support while focusing on recovering away from previous negative influences.

The facility combines traditional talk therapy with substance abuse and mental health education practices. While in treatment, clients learn a series of coping skills that help them live a healthier lifestyle outside of a treatment program. These skills are tailored to individual clients’ needs.

The facility also promotes healthy living practices that refine clients’ bodies and general health. These include exercise, as well as improving nutrition and sleep. The facility also focuses on teaching clients to be analytical and self-reflective so that they can self-manage concerns and find effective solutions.

Family involvement is encouraged throughout treatment. Only 69.5 percent of facilities in the state provide family support services to clients seeking mental health treatment. There is a family support group that meets each week in order to make sure that family members receive the support that they need.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

CD-BHU is a part of the hospital and is clinical in nature It has several large group meeting areas, as well as private offices for individual sessions. There is also an art room where art therapy is held. There are medical facilities as well as staff members available 24/7 to address client’s needs. In some cases, clients can take advantage of the sensory room to alleviate stress and anxiety through alternative means.

One alum surveyed ranked the facility four out of five stars for accommodations & amenities, and another gave Cooley Dickinson one out of five stars.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes psychiatrists, registered nurses, counselors, social workers, occupational therapists, chaplains, peer support specialists, nutritionists, and therapy dogs. CD-BHU also works with clients that have completed treatment programs for mental disorders and want to mentor others. The facility is a part of the 38.6% of facilities in Massachusetts that are accredited by the Joint Commission.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing there have been two alumni polled by Rehabs.com about Cooley Dickinson.
