<p><strong>ABOUT LOWELL COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER</strong></p> <p>Located in Lowell, Mass., Lowell Community Health Center (Lowell CHC) offers a full range of health services to individuals of <strong>all ages</strong>, including prevention, treatment, and health education. The behavioral health unit provides <strong>outpatient counseling services</strong> and treatment to people struggling with substance misuse and mental health disorders.</p> <p>In addition to behavioral health care, Lowell CHC provides services such as primary care, OB/GYN, dental care, and adolescent-specific services. Lowell CHC also provides treatment for HIV and is one of 117 <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/MA17.pdf" target="_blank">treatment facilities in Massachusetts</a> (33.3 percent) to provide early intervention HIV care; one of 269 (76.6 percent) to provide HIV or AIDS education, counseling, or support; and one of 141 (40.2 percent) to provide HIV testing.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Lowell CHC offers <strong>individual, group, couple, and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/the-pain-of-addiction-in-the-family-how-counseling-can-help/" target="_blank">family therapy</a></strong>. The center places a heavy emphasis on offering culturally competent service and is able to provide a a highly individualized approach to treatment, regardless of a client's background. </p> <p>According to Lowell CHC's website, the facility's treatment team works with each client to <strong>identify needs and develop long-term goals</strong>. Psychopharmacology (mental health drug therapy) is also available. Group counseling sessions may be age- and/or specialized to address specific concerns, such as relapse prevention groups, anger management, etc.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The facility's website notes the treatment team includes mental health professionals and certified addiction counselors. Many Lowell Community Health Center employees are bilingual. Collectively, the staff speaks <strong>28 different languages</strong>, and at least 40 staff members are trained medical interpreters.</p> <p>According to a <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/MA17.pdf" target="_blank">2017 SAMHSA survey</a>, 25.7 percent of treatment facilities in Massachusetts employ staff counselors that can provide services in a language other than English. Of these counselors in the state, 91.4 percent provide services in Spanish and 39.1 provide services in other languages. Lowell CHC is one of 99 <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/MA17.pdf" target="_blank">treatment facilities in Massachusetts</a> (28.2 percent of all facilities) to be certified by the Joint Commission.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s former clients. However, reviews on third-party sites were mixed. On Google, 69 individuals contributed to an average rating of 2.4 out of five stars.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> On Yelp, 11 individuals contributed to an average of two stars.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> Though reviews were not specific to the behavioral health program, alumni on both sites frequently complained about lack of communication, long wait times, and poor administration and management.</p> <p>"The wait times are horrific, the doctors/np have too many patients. Calling to speak to a nurse and no call backs," alum Michelle wrote in a representative review on Google.</p> <p>On Lowell CHC's official Facebook page, which facility staff can manage, nearly 200 people contributed to a more favorable average rating of 3.6 out of five stars.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-3"><sup>[3]</sup></a></small></p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from loved ones, the roughly half dozen friends and family members of patients who reviewed Lowell CHC on Google, Yelp, or Facebook all left one-star reviews. Like alumni who left commentary on these third-party sites, loved ones frequently complained of long wait times and an inability to communicate with facility staff or management.</p> <p><strong>WHAT STAFF SAY</strong></p> <p>The one staff member polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided highly positive feedback. The anonymous staff member gave five out of five stars for every category evaluated, including when asked if they would recommend Lowell Community Health Center, treatment effectiveness, treatment of <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders,</a> and counseling options. </p> <p>The staff member noted specialized programs as a strength. "I find some very helpful," they wrote, but added, "and I also found some that are not so helpful." While the staff member gave five out of five stars for the staff's level of training and experience, they also noted "Lack of feelings of staff" as a weakness of the facility.</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its cost of treatment. However, the center's website notes Lowell Community Health Center provides access to <strong>treatment to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay</strong>, which is a policy adopted by 55.8 percent of <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/MA17.pdf" target="_blank">treatment facilities in Massachusetts</a>. The lone individual surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave five out of five stars when asked if treatment was worth the cost and whether it was affordable. </p> <p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p> <p>According to the <a href="http://www.lowellsun.com/news/ci_32297581/lowell-house-breaks-ground-innovative-opioid-treatment-and" target="_blank">Lowell Sun</a>, Lowell CHC in conjunction with the Lowell House opened the Center for Integrated Treatment and Recovery (CITAR) in November 2018.
