ABOUT EMERSON HOSPITAL – PSYCHIATRY/BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Located in Concord, Mass., Emerson Hospital offers residential care, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a partial hospitalization program (PHP), stabilization, and aftercare for adults struggling with substance abuse disorders. The unit is among the 34 hospital-based facilities in the state where on-site detoxification services are available as needed for stabilization and long-term treatment preparation.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at Emerson Hospital is group-oriented, offering clients a blend of psycho-education, counseling, and 12-step-based programming, such as involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and SMART Recovery. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and psychopharmacology may also make up part of the curricula, based on each client’s co-occurring mental health needs and individualized treatment plan.

Adults with acute concerns begin with a brief stay in the hospital’s secure, 31-bed inpatient unit. Once stabilized, aftercare may entail referrals to one of the hospital’s two outpatient tracks: PHP or IOP.

Running daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the day treatment program (also known as partial hospitalization) consists of on- and off-site meetings and presentations. With similar offerings, the intensive outpatient (IOP) program meets in both the mornings and afternoons up to five days per week, providing clients with flexibility to accommodate their ongoing work and family commitments.

Throughout treatment, all participants work closely with their assigned case manager. If necessary, sober living planning is available at the end of each program to help clients transition back into the community.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The hospital’s Psychiatric/Behavioral Health unit uses a multidisciplinary staff comprised of addiction specialists, clinicians, and case managers that work with primary care providers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the hospital regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, though the facility does indicate that unit offers 31 beds. The one anonymous alum polled by Rehabs.com to date awarded the hospital five out of five stars for its accommodations, meal quality, and overall cleanliness and upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received feedback from one alum of Emerson Hospital, who provided a fairly positive review. Despite a low rating of one star for counseling options and two stars for exercise activities, the alum strongly agreed both that he would recommend the facility to others, offering five stars for this metric.

The former client also gave five stars for the staff's level of experience and training, describing staff as “compassionate and caring.” They also gave five stars for the treatment of co-occurring disorders, as well as four stars for family participation. “They’re also highly skilled at therapy, and I was grateful for their intervention during my causative depression… I am alive today because of them,” they wrote.

On Yelp, the facility earned one out of five stars from all three reviewers to date.[1] Alum J.H. wrote, “Had I remained on the med, I could have gotton sicker. But it was never checked out. I had to be discharged when oupatient treaters demanded it.” This concern with medication mismanagement discharge procedures was echoed in the other two written comments as well.

FINANCING

Emerson Hospital works with many commercial insurance plans and accepts Medicare and Tricare. Financial assistance is also available for those in need, as the hospital proudly maintains a “single standard of care for all patients, regardless of payer or ability to pay.” In Massachusetts, the hospital is among the 57.8 percent of facilities to accept Medicare.

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/emerson-hospital-psychiatric-services-concord
