Editorial Review

ABOUT WALDEN — LEXINGTON PARK

Walden, whose name was inspired by the work of Henry David Thoreau, is a community-based nonprofit that operates six locations in southern Maryland. The organization, which was founded in 1973, runs a 24-hour local crisis hotline, and its centers provide an array of crisis, behavioral health, trauma, and recovery services.

The Lexington Park center, located in a quiet neighborhood in southern Maryland, offers assessments and outpatient therapy for individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health disorders, as well as a crisis program for adults and children who have suffered sexual or domestic assault.

This center does not offer medical detox services. Walden offers residential treatment for substance abuse from other facilities in its network.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Walden is available to offer intervention services, with staff trained in the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model. Assessments take between an hour and an hour and a half, and are provided on a walk-in basis.

Walden’s alcohol and drug addiction treatment programs are individualized to suit clients’ needs. Intake counselors generally recommend clients to the least restrictive level of care that will meet their needs. Programs include an intensive outpatient (IOP) program that offers nine hours of programming a week, and individual, group, and family therapy offered outside of a structured IOP, for those who need less intensive treatment.

For the families of individuals struggling with substance abuse, Walden recommends participation in SMART Recovery meetings — whether or not the loved one in question is in recovery.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Across Walden, staff includes licensed professional counselors, social workers, and addiction counselors, however, it’s not clear which of these credentialed staff can be found at the Lexington Park facility.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from former clients of this facility.

Elsewhere online, though, ratings for the network as a whole (not just the Lexington Park facility) were very mixed. Walden's Facebook page, which it has the ability to manage, had an average rating of 4.9 out of five stars.[1] All commentary was positive with many calling the program "awesome." A couple also noted that they felt safe there.

Additional commentary on Google was more mixed. Four ratings averaged just two out of five stars where Brenda wrote: “Receptionist can't get appointments straight. Always double booking. No body ever returns a call… Not professional or organized,” giving a single star.[2] On the other hand, Tiffani gave a perfect rating and said, "Great, loving and kind staff. Not sure why the bad reviews but I really enjoy coming here and the ladies have all been so helpful. They have fun events and have helped with my kids when I have needed it."

An additional rating for four out of five stars appeared on Citehealth at the time of this writing.[3] The anonymous reviewer wrote: "Walden Sierra is a "Great" place to go when receiving aftercare or inpatient treatment."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at this center. "Knowledgeable and compasionate but small facility, staff was very understanding and helpful,” they wrote, giving the center five stars for its family program and counseling options, four stars for its overall effectiveness, and two stars for its holistic options.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from staff, but reviews elsewhere online for the network as a whole yielded mixed feedback.

At the time of this writing, secondary employment-review site Indeed.com yielded seven ratings averaging 3.4 out of five stars.[4] Several staffers complained about low pay and high turn over rates. On a more positive note, an anonymous five-star reviewer wrote in a comment representational of what others said, "There is no typical day at work, not in residential substance abuse services! It is extremely high paced and there are never shortages of learning opportunities." A reviewer who gave three stars added, "Due to the cliental, it is always changing, challenging, but rewarding."

Additionally, there are two ratings on Glassdoor, one for three out of five stars and another for just one star.[5] One reviewer enjoyed helping people improve their lives while the other was pleased with their fellow co-workers. Both complained about "poor management," and one wrote: "Disorganized, cares more about profit than helping."

FINANCING

According to Walden’s website, the organization accepts most major insurance providers, as well as credit card and cash.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/BeaconRecovery/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] https://goo.gl/ctqm9w
[3] http://citehealth.com/reviews/13455
[4] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Walden-Sierra/reviews
[5] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Walden-Sierra-Reviews-E1015208.htm
