ABOUT DR. JOSEPH HENRY TYLER, JR. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

A service of the State of Louisiana’s Office of Behavioral Health, the Dr. Joseph Henry Tyler Jr. Behavioral Health Center (TMHC) provides outpatient-based services and a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults and youths** struggling with substance abuse and psychiatric conditions, including co-occurring disorders. Located in Lafayette, La., the facility does not provide on-site detoxification; however, clinicians may make referrals to an appropriate inpatient facility for clients who require crisis intervention or detoxification services. In Louisiana, TMHC is among 55.1 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that receive state funding.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To help clinicians form an individualized plan of care, clients first participate in an initial psychosocial assessment and psychiatric evaluation. If a client requires a structured, supervised environment to obtain stability, they may be referred to the facility’s partial hospitalization program (PHP). The PHP provides similar structured programming as an inpatient facility, however, clients return home each night after a full day of treatment. TMHC serves the parishes of Lafayette, upper Saint Martin, and eastern Vermilion.

During PHP, clients may participate in individual, group, and family counseling sessions that address specific issues relevant to the population in treatment. For example, the center may facilitate specialized counseling sessions on trauma for individuals struggling with a primary psychiatric disorder, while individuals struggling with co-occurring substance abuse difficulties may attend addiction-focused counseling groups on relapse prevention, trigger avoidance, and developing community-based support networks. TMHC also may provide educational classes and workshops on improving coping skills, regulating emotions, and practicing self-awareness.

Along with counseling sessions and educational classes, TMHC provides ongoing psychiatric evaluations and medication management to alleviate the symptoms of specific mental health disorders. Once a client indicates stability in PHP, clinicians may recommend they “step-down” to a less-intensive level of care. TMHC offers both an intensive outpatient program with more than nine hours of weekly programming, and a less-intensive traditional outpatient program (OP). In the state, TMHC is one of 69 substance abuse treatment facilities that offer an IOP and one of 87 that offer an OP, according to a 2017 SAMHSA survey.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the Office of Behavioral Health’s website, all treatment programs “utilize the unique skills of professionals with appropriate competencies, credentials and certifications.” The professionals may include psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse and mental health counselors, child psychologists, and case managers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

TMHC is located in a tree-lined complex with several low-story buildings and large on-site parking lots. The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave four out of five stars for the facility's cleanliness and upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback to date. On secondary sites, TMHC received favorable coverage: 4.1 out of five stars based on 11 reviews on Google; and 4.5 stars based on six reviews on the facility’s unofficial Facebook page. [1] [2]

Reviewers praised the “exceptional service” as well as the attention and care they received, which Karen expressed as: “This Clinic has saved my life and continue to do so. Without Tyler mental health and it’s on going treatment, I would be a statistic.” In isolated criticism, reviewers discussed the hazards of free care, about which Jake wrote: “Wow, free psychiatric care but you get what you pay for, don’t expect too much.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted positive feedback about TMHC: perfect five stars for likelihood to recommend, staff experience and training, and treatment of co-occurring disorders; four out of five stars for connectivity/visitor policy, counseling options, and family participation; and three stars for affordability and holistic offerings. Some consulors are recovering addicts,” and wanted Rehabs.com to know there was “time reserved for family members.”

FINANCING

TMHC accepts both private insurance plans and Medicaid.
