ABOUT TOWNSEND – HOUMA

Located 57 miles southwest of New Orleans, Townsend of Houma, La., provides outpatient-based treatment and medication-assisted detoxification for individuals struggling with substance abuse. This facility also treats other addictive behavior, such as compulsive sex, overeating, and gambling. Operated by the Louisiana-based Townsend network, the Houma center serves all of Terrebone and Lafourche Parishes.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Townsend’s website, the center’s treatment approach is designed to address the underlying neurobiological factors of addiction, namely the effect that addictive behaviors have on the brain’s reward centers. Upon admission, clients undergo an initial substance abuse assessment — and for some, genetic testing — to help clinicians determine an individualized plan of care.

To accommodate busy professionals, parents, and students, the Houma location offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) with both day and evening sessions. Throughout treatment, clients participate in individual therapy, group therapy sessions, and educational classes on substance abuse. Treatment modalities include motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. Townsend also may incorporate medication-assisted therapy (MAT) (e.g., Suboxone) for individuals recovering from opioid dependency.
Townsend of Houma encourages family participation in treatment and holds a weekly family night.

The facility also provides ongoing continuing care and chronic disease management and support.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Townsend of Houma employs a team of psychiatrists, substance abuse counselors, case managers, and phlebotomists for medical testing.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photos on the Townsend website for the Houma outpatient facility depict bright, airy meeting and consultation rooms with comfortable chairs.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

On Google, an alumnus submitted a perfect five-star review for Townsend of Houma. Kellen summarized his successful experience in being treated at the facility, which helped him recover from meth addiction.[1] This former client wrote: “I did all of the assigned work and when I went in I was surrendered and done with drugs. I took their advice and got engaged in 12 step fellowship.” After completing the formal program, this alumnus noted: “I still go to continuing care at least once a month to check in with them.” Kellen added: “I was treated with meds and was off of them within a year” and praised the doctor and “great counselor.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

An employee polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing suggested that the program had issues with organization and program implementation. The staff member gave the center only one out of five stars when asked if they would recommend Townsend of Houma. However, they did give the facility a perfect five stars for cleanliness and three stars in a number of other categories, including the visitor policy, the staff’s level of training and experience, and affordability. They wrote: “Connecting with others was a strength” and added: “All over the place no real rhym or reason and after three weeks was useless to hear same information.”

FINANCING

According to the website, Townsend of Houma accepts a range of private insurance plans, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, to cover the cost of treatment, as well as self-payment. Clients are responsible for co-payments and deductibles, and financing may be available to qualified individuals.

CONCLUSION

As of January 28, 2019, all Townsend facilities are no longer owned and operated by American Addiction Centers (AAC). They are now a part of Avenues Recovery Centers.

[1]https://goo.gl/3u2vVX
