Editorial Review

ABOUT JOHNSON COUNTY KANSAS - ADULT DETOXIFICATION UNIT

The Adult Detoxification Unit (ADU) of Johnson County Mental Health Center, located in Olathe, Kan., offers medical detoxification services to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse. ADU accepts admissions 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, all year, including a 24-hour dedicated emergency phone line. The goal of the facility is to ensure that every individual has the opportunity for recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s treatment program offers a safe and supportive environment for clients to withdraw from alcohol and/or drugs. In order to be admitted, clients are screened by telephone to determine if admission to the program is appropriate. Eligible clients must have recently used a substance and be experiencing withdrawal symptoms, be medically stable, able to ambulate, and be free of suicidal, homicidal, or psychiatric behavior.

Throughout the stay, clients are monitored by the staff for any symptoms and are referred for medical care as needed. Stays are typically brief during detox and counseling/therapy is not a part of the program, although the client handbook does indicate 12-Step meetings may be offered during the day. Prior to discharge, all clients are either referred to other providers for ongoing treatment or connected with community-based support services such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous

Clients expected to complete basic chores at the residence including cleaning up after themselves in common spaces as well as their bedrooms, assist in cleaning the kitchen, tables, and floors after meals, and shower daily.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no detailed information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff and their credentials. However, the facility’s website does indicate that client’s “symptoms are monitored and evaluated by ADU staff throughout the client's stay, and referred for medical care when necessary.” It is not clear if there are medical staff available at all times during the detox process.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility offers 14 beds for male and female adult clients in a residential setting. Clients stay in semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms. Towels and bedding are provided by the facility and all meals are served to clients during their stay. At the time of this writing, the one loved one and the one staff member polled by Rehabs.com gave accommodations & amenities four and three stars, respectively.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former clients, and feedback is scarce on secondary sites as well.

On Google, a four-star rating and a five-star rating were left by the only two reviewers.[1] The four-star reviewer left no written comments, but the five-star reviewer felt "THEY DO THEIR BEST WITHIN THEIR EXTREMELY limited RESOURCES."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there has been one friend or family member of a client polled by Rehabs.com. The anonymous parent of a client felt that the facility was adequate in general although not for his child in particular.

The loved one gave the facility three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and four stars for meals & nutrition. The loved one was not involved in helping the client pay for treatment, did visit the client during treatment, and did stay in regular contact with the client, and didn’t know whether the facility appeared to match up with how it was described on the website or other marketing materials.

The loved one added that the client didn’t benefit from the care they received at the facility and that he would not recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab. He added additional commentary stating, “I have seen others do well but my child is not ready to benefit."

WHAT STAFF SAY

The singular staff member polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave treatment effectiveness only three stars.

Additionally, this anonymous employee gave the facility three stars for accommodations & amenities, and two stars for meals & nutrition. She disagreed that there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; that the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; and that family and loved ones were able to participate in treatment through facility programming.

This individual listed the facility's low-cost as a strength, but felt that a major weakness was that the criminal justice program focused more on punishment (rather than rehabilitation).

FINANCING

Services are provided according to each client’s ability to pay as part of the Kansas Public Mental Health System. Johnson County residents may qualify for reduced costs based on their household income and family size. Fees will be determined prior to the start of treatment. The facility’s website indicates that insurance is accepted and staff members will assist in determining coverage.

[1] https://goo.gl/xGsY9B
