What reviewers said

Reviewers frequently praised the facility's counseling, educational classes, and comprehensive aftercare planning, noting the flexibility of its various outpatient locations. However, some individuals criticized the communication and suggested that the facility required more resources, staff, and security measures. While the program itself was generally viewed as providing good tools for sobriety, multiple reviewers expressed concerns regarding perceived high relapse rates among patients.

Editorial Review

ABOUT COMMUNITY & FAMILY RESOURCES

Situated near the Des Moines River in the city of Fort Dodge, Community & Family Resources (CFR) provides comprehensive treatment services to Iowa residents for substance abuse, problem gambling, and mental health disorders. The agency, which has been in operation since 1968 and includes 10 locations, treats adults and adolescents through residential, outpatient, extended outpatient (EOP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs.

Medically-monitored detox services are available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at Community & Family Resources begins with an in-person biopsychosocial assessment. Potential clients and their families can schedule same-day assessments during the week, as well as be referred by physicians and other facilities. Assessments are completed by trained physicians and medical staff, and are used to determine the best method of treatment.

Treatment involves weekly programming including counseling, group therapy, and 12-step programming. Clients also participate in sober living skills and addiction educational activities. Gender-specific programming, anger management training, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) are also used to address the needs of each client group.

Specialized programs are available for key client groups including OWI Programming (Residential Corrections Clients only), jail based programming, and PTSD treatment support. Clients can enroll in these services as a part of their overall treatment on an as needed basis.

The outpatient programs use the same methodology as the residential program, but incorporate other aspects to help clients remain sober. Random drug testing and family participation are included as a way of managing sobriety. Family members participate in specialized counseling and rehab activities to rebuild connections and a support network for each client.

The Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescent Recovery and Success (STARS) program is designed for adolescents and focuses on the specific needs of the age group. Clients participate in the program for 30 to 90 days and complete more than 50 hours of programming per week. The program also provides care planning support to help clients adjust their care plan as needed to address specific issues.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Along with a medical director and a 24-hour nursing staff overseeing detox, the treatment team consists mainly of certified alcohol and drug counselors. Group counselors, certified educators, and support staff members are also available during programming.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Few details are provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its living arrangements and related offering, but it does note all CFR campuses are tobacco-free. In addition, five reviewers polled by Rehabs.com to date gave an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars for the facility’s accommodations and cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Five former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com about Community & Family Resources at the time of this writing gave at least four out of five stars for meals, exercise/leisure activities, family participation, and staff experience and training.

Alumni were pleased with the treatment program, in terms of what the treatment program taught clients and the format. One anonymous alum indicated that the one-on-one and group counseling were strengths of the facility, and another anonymous reviewer noted: “The facility provides good tools to start, maintain and carry you into a life of sobriety. It is up to the individual to use those tools.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave CFR a lukewarm review. When asked to rate, on a scale of one to five, whether they would recommend the facility, the loved one gave three out of five stars.

While the anonymous loved one rated family participation four out of five stars and affordability five out of five stars, the facility’s holistic options received only one out of five stars. The loved one wrote, “They are trying,” but added there were “not enough resources and staff/security measures.”

FINANCING

According to the Community & Family Resources’ website, Iowa Medicaid (Title 19) and most private insurance plans are accepted. Self pay on a sliding scale is also offered to clients who qualify. The fee scale is based on family income and the discretion of the facility.
