Editorial Review

ABOUT IOWA LUTHERAN HOSPITAL

The Powell Chemical Dependency Center at Iowa Lutheran General Hospital, located in Des Moines, Iowa offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient treatment services along with detox services to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse. The treatment center is located on the fourth floor of the main hospital. Founded in 1973, the treatment center has served thousands of clients on their road to recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s treatment program takes a holistic approach to recovery by treating the mind, body, and spirit. The facility considers addiction a very treatable disease. Prior to admission, clients make a phone call and complete an initial evaluation so that the proper placement may be determined. After admission, clients receive an individualized treatment plan including individual counseling, group therapy, medication management as necessary, and more. Clients may also receive medically supervised detoxification services at the start of their treatment if needed.

Families are included in the treatment program and the facility offers a unique family program for concerned loved ones. The facility believes that the family must also heal from the addiction illness in order for the client to be successful. Families receive education on substance abuse and learn skills to better cope with family stress often caused by addiction.

Continuing Care and Aftercare are available for all clients who successfully complete the program. Continuing Care includes group therapy sessions and peer support groups along with individual therapy and co-dependency education, all led by counselors. Aftercare is led by volunteers as a way for alumni to stay connected and continue to support each other on a regular basis as their recovery continues.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes certified addiction counselors, masters and doctoral level clinicians, advanced addiction counselors, nurses, and technicians. One alum and one family member polled by Rehabs.com both agreed that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained. Another loved one, however, did not agree.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, one alum and one family member gave the facility three out of five stars for accommodations and amenities while a second loved one gave this metric four stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing there has been one alum polled by Rehabs.com. The anonymous client gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and two stars for meals & nutrition. He agreed that the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; and that the alum would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.

He felt that a strength of the facility was the personal attention offered but that a weakness of the program was that it was too structured. He also added, “I felt they truly cared about each of us going through the program.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there have been two friends and family members polled by Rehabs.com. The loved ones gave polarizing reviews. One anonymous loved one gave the facility three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, four stars for accommodations & amenities, and two stars for meals & nutrition. She strongly agreed that the facility’s cell phone and visitation policy was fair; that family and loved ones were able to participate in treatment through facility programming; and was neutral when asked if the facility had high quality holistic offerings. She felt that a strength of the facility was that her loved one is now off drugs and that the facility staff were very kind and professional.

Another anonymous loved one did not share the same opinion. This loved one gave the facility three stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and four stars for meals & nutrition She strongly disagreed that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; that the alum would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab; and that the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders. The loved one added, “their program is a joke...It doesn't help, they border line are abusive and it is a total joke.”

FINANCING

The facility accepts most major insurance plans according to their website. HealthGrove indicates that the facility also accepts Medicaid, State Insurance (Other than Medicaid), and Military.[1] The facility does not publish fees for their services.

[1] http://treatment-facilities.healthgrove.com/l/17931/Iowa-Lutheran-Hospital
