ABOUT LIGHTHOUSE RECOVERY CENTER - WOMEN’S FACILITY

Lighthouse Recovery Center (LRC) is a private, nonprofit organization offering faith-based, gender-specific sober living facilities in the southwest Indiana town of Washington. The center is among only 34 (or 12.8%) of Indiana’s 265 total facilities that provide recovery support for more than 30 days. The women’s facility is located in the town’s center, while the men’s home is located in the nearby countryside.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before admission into Lighthouse Recovery Center's sober living facility, women participate in an on-site interview to ensure the center offers an appropriate level of care. While in treatment, LRC can coordinate with court representatives to ensure any specific requirements are satisfied. Residents should expect to remain in the program for a minimum of nine months and up to two years.

Treatment at the facility is predominantly based on 12-step principles and participation, Christian studies, and life skills development. Abstinence and responsible independence are LRC’s stated goals. While residing in the center, women attend daily classes on such topics as nutrition, drugs and alcohol, anger management, parenting, improving social skills, relapse prevention, and Christian spiritual growth.

According to a state facility directory, the Matrix Model and Hazelden recovery materials are also utilized to support ongoing recovery. In addition, women have the opportunity to study for and obtain their GED, as well as obtain employment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

As a faith-based program, treatment staff are all practicing Christians. Each client works with a licensed addiction counselor, and the center’s founder and coordinator is identified as a former drug dealer in recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Lighthouse Recovery Center’s women’s facility accommodates 17 to 24 residents. Children may also reside at the facility, making LRC one of fewer than five facilities in Indiana providing this co-residential service, according to 2016 federally collected data.

Lighthouse maintains a strict environment with curfews and limitations placed on outside communication. Clients may not have cell phones for their first six months in residence, and music and movies must be “Christian-oriented,” according to the website. The facility is non-smoking.

Residents rotate house leadership roles and participate in assigned chores. The center also assists residents in setting up savings for use after discharge. Lighthouse hosts church services, open to the public, in an on-site sanctuary.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date praised the facility and reported they'd strongly recommend the program to others. Out of five stars, alum A.S. provided ratings of three or more stars for all but one of 15 metrics measured. She granted four- or five-star ratings for the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance, opportunities for family participation, and the staff’s level of training and experience. Policies regarding outside connectivity received three stars.

Identifying forming faith-based relationships as a strength, A.S. nevertheless cited a need for more “understanding if the person is not religious.”

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded nearly universally positive feedback, with average ratings of four out of five stars from nine individuals on Google reviews. On the facility's official website page, which the facility can manage, 35 out of 36 reviewers (both men and women) awarded LRC maximum five-star ratings.[1][2]

About half of the 11 comments from women alumni mentioned the religious nature of their experience, all of them favorably. Reviewers also highlighted the staff’s lack of judgment. In a representative review, T.M. wrote that the women’s director “refused to give up on me even when others wanted to,” adding that the program was challenging but effective.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date offered a starkly different opinion of the facility, offering just one star for treatment effectiveness and two stars for counseling options. Although the survey respondent offered four-star ratings for the facility's family programming and its affordability, the reviewer objected to the center’s religious approach and disorganization.

FINANCING

Clients pay for their room and board at Lighthouse Recovery Center through jobs they secure during treatment. The minimum fee is $160/week. Recipients of SNAP or WIC benefits (food stamps) are expected to contribute those as well. The facility does not bill insurance.

CONCLUSION

In December 2017, a local Washington newspaper reported that Lighthouse Recovery Center’s women’s facility had recently advanced to full licensing by the state of Indiana.

[1] https://goo.gl/eKGoN1
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/LighthouseRecoveryCenterIndiana/reviews/?ref=page_internal
