Editorial Review

ABOUT GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL - SAMARITAN CENTER

Good Samaritan Hospital is a 232-bed community healthcare facility. Alongside a broad range of medical services, the hospital runs a comprehensive behavioral health division - namely, Samaritan Center. Located in Vincennes, Ind., the center treats a range of mental and behavioral health disorders, including alcohol and drug dependence, gambling addiction, and co-occurring disorders. Samaritan Center offers 24-hour emergency services and acute-care hospitalization, as well as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and outpatient therapy. Detox is not available onsite.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment options at Samaritan Center include inpatient emergency services, as well as its outpatient services. Clients can be admitted to the hospital for crisis stabilization and/or observation. However, patients are quickly transitioned into outpatient services, as soon as possible, for ongoing care. Inpatient services are intended for emergency purposes only and may include counseling and pharmacological intervention.

The center is one of 19 hospital-based facilities in the state that offer treatment services for behavioral health. The facility's outpatient-based programs include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and general outpatient care. Both treatment programs begin with diagnostic evaluations, which include a series of medical and behavioral health examinations by a team of specialists to determine an individualized approach to care.

The treatment process focuses on traditional methods of care such as individual, group, and family therapy, which can help clients better understand the underlying factors of their addiction. Clients work with counselors over an extended period to develop new life habits and reduce negative behaviors. In addition to counseling, clients also participate in a range of educational classes and coping skills workshops.

Samaritan Center also provides specialized treatment for adolescents and children. It is one of the 73 Indiana facilities that offers programming for adolescents.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Samaritan Center employs three psychiatrists and a handful of family nurse practitioners. The facility is certified by the National Health Service Corporation. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center a three- and a five out of five star-rating for the staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Good Samaritan Hospital offers a clinical atmosphere that's conducive to stabilization and 24-hour access to medical attention. The two Rehabs.com survey respondents gave the center one star and and three stars for the facility's overall cleanliness and upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed opinions concerning the facility. They shared higher ratings of four out of five stars or higher for the center’s counseling options and treatment for co-occurring disorders. In their written commentary, both reviewers noted the center’s attempt to truly engage them. “They listen and try to understand,” one reviewer wrote, while the other alum added that staff “Do what's possible to find a suitable treatment.” Still, the latter wrote about frequent counselor changes, while the former wrote: “They always want money.”

The one secondary review available on YellowPages.com gave the facility a one out of five-star review. The anonymous former client made the claim that, while they had a “very good doctor” at this facility, they encountered problems with a “very rude uncaring and very unethical” social worker. “She acted like i was wasting her precious time,” they wrote.[1]

FINANCING

Samaritan Center accepts Medicare and Medicaid, which are accepted by 34% and 62% of U.S. treatment facilities respectively. It also accepts private insurance and self-payment. Financial assistance is also available based on income and household size. The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com gave the center one star and and three stars for its affordability.

CONCLUSION

The staff at Good Samaritan routinely hosts training events for the community. These events include prenatal classes, parenting classes, and education about rehab services. That way, the community has the resources needed to seek effective treatment.

[1] https://www.yellowpages.com/vincennes-in/mip/samaritan-center-19240574?lid=19240574
