<p><strong>ABOUT OAKLAWN – GOSHEN CAMPUS</strong></p> <p>Sponsored by the Mennonite church, Oaklawn is a community mental health center designated by the state of Indiana to serve Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties. One of four Oaklawn sites, the Goshen campus <strong>offers intensive outpatient programming (IOP) for adults and adolescents</strong> struggling with substance use and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">dually diagnosed</a> mental health disorders. </p> <p>Of Indiana’s 305 addiction treatment facilities, just <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">27.2 percent provide</a> programming tailored for adolescents and 35.1 percent treat co-occurring disorders. The Goshen campus also includes a residential psychiatric treatment facility for adults. </p> <p>Oaklawn's Elkhart campus offers outpatient treatment for process addictions such as gambling, along with chemical dependency. Additional locations include South Bend and a children’s campus <a href="https://www.rehabs.com/listings/oaklawn-elkhart-campus-406787965/" target="_blank">in Mishawaka</a>. The organization also provides specialized addiction services to the Amish.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Admission to Oaklawn treatment programs begins through the organization’s central access center. <strong>Clients receive an initial phone-based assessment</strong>, used to determine next steps and an appropriate level of care. These services are <strong>available in Spanish and English</strong>. Addiction treatment is primarily through outpatient care.</p> <p>The Oaklawn Goshen campus offers two main intensive outpatient programs. The <strong>dual diagnosis track</strong> runs for <strong>14 weeks</strong> and the <strong>substance use disorder-only</strong> IOP runs for <strong>eight weeks</strong>. Each meets three times per week and includes <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/extended-recovery-programs/" target="_blank">aftercare</a> for several months through once-a-week sessions. </p> <p><strong>One IOP is designed specifically for women</strong> and utilizes the <a href="https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/principles-drug-addiction-treatment-research-based-guide-third-edition/evidence-based-approaches-to-drug-addiction-treatment/behavioral-3" target="_blank">Matrix Model</a>, which combines self-help facilitation (such as <strong>12-step groups) with addiction education and group therapy</strong>. In Indiana, <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">60 percent</a> of rehab facilities provide Matrix Model programming. This facility also offers an early intervention program for marijuana users.</p> <p>The residential psychiatric program for adults utilizes evidence-based treatment modalities, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In both residential and outpatient treatment, <strong>family therapy sessions</strong> are encouraged. </p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>According to the facility's website, Oaklawn employs a treatment team of board-certified psychiatrists, advanced practice and psychiatric nurses, master’s-level therapists, psychologists, licensed addiction counselors, and recreational therapists. The organization is one of the <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/dasis2/nssats/2017_nssats_rpt.pdf" target="_blank">20 percent</a> of facilities nationwide accredited by the <a href="https://www.jointcommission.org/accreditation/accreditation_main.aspx" target="_blank">Joint Commission</a>. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>The two former clients polled by Rehabs.com to date each rated their likelihood to recommend Oaklawn’s Goshen campus to others five out of five stars. On some aspects of the facility evaluated, including family participation and the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, both alumni awarded four or five stars apiece. Other areas received split feedback, including two and five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience, and three and five for affordability. The sole alum who rated dual diagnosis treatment selected five stars.</p> <p>Elsewhere, online reviews for Oaklawn Goshen were mostly for the residential psychiatric program. On Google, nine individuals rated the facility <strong>3.4 out of five stars</strong> on average.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> Comments tended to be critical or mixed, citing an <strong>overly strict approach</strong> and disagreements about treatment choices and medication. </p> <p>Oaklawn’s official Facebook page, which it can monitor, included about 25 ratings at the time of this writing, split about two to three between one-star ratings and maximum five-star ratings, with few in between.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> Critical comments included repeated <strong>concerns about the staff’s professionalism</strong> and communication, as well as a lack of progress made in treatment. Positive reviewers <strong>tended to report improved lives after treatment</strong> and skills learned for managing mental health struggles.</p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com agreed on a few aspects of Oaklawn Goshen, including ratings of four or five stars apiece for affordability and dual diagnosis treatment, poor connectivity policies (two stars from each), and overly strict practices. Opinions were split between high and moderate for the facility’s cleanliness and family participation. "Staff can be empathetic and helpful. However, they are aggressive in gaining contol of people," one parent wrote.</p> <p><strong>WHAT STAFF SAY</strong></p> <p>Feedback for the Oaklawn campus at Goshen was also mixed from former and current employees. Of 15 ratings on Indeed, the facility received about one-third five out of five stars, and one-third three stars. Complaints tended to be administrative. “But the friendliness and kindness shown by staff to each other and the patients make the work life amazing,” one staffer wrote in a representative review.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-3"><sup>[3]</sup></a></small></p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>According to the facility's website, Oaklawn staff will assist clients in determining or applying for treatment coverage.
