ABOUT ADVOCATE CHRIST MEDICAL CENTER

Located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, Ill., Advocate Christ Medical Center is a large hospital with a designated unit for treating individuals struggling with substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. The facility offers a substance abuse partial-hospitalization (PHP) program for adults, as well as inpatient and outpatient programs for those with psychiatric symptoms. A specialized inpatient program is available for older adults with mental illness. It is one of 99 such programs in the state.

Advocate Health Care, which owns and operates this hospital, is one of the largest health care system in Illinois and includes 12 hospitals and a large network of community hospitals.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Advocate Health Care Network is a faith-based organization, but substance abuse treatment is not explicitly faith-based. Adults and adolescents can access a short-term, intensive psychiatric partial hospitalization program for substance abuse, and adults can attend an inpatient program that promotes mental stability and wellness. Only 14.2 percent of facilities in Illinois offer PHP programs.

Advocate Christ Medical Center offers drug and alcohol evaluations and screenings, adolescent smoking cessation, educational sessions, support groups, and other community health activities that support recovery.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility's website, the treatment team includes "caring, experienced staff" and medical providers.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Five alumni reviews to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing were mixed. When asked whether they would recommend the facility, three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave ratings of two, three, and five out of five star ratings. Staff experience received above-average ratings of four and five out of five stars and alumni commented on the qualifications and attentiveness of staff. “The staff was really nice and very considerate and empathetic,” an anonymous alum wrote, while another felt there was "abundant qualified help."

Four alumni rated the program's holistic offerings only 2.25 out of five stars. “The program should have offered more holistic options. We live in a society that wants to medicate us when there are natural approaches. It was just expensive and I left needing help,” one anonymous alum wrote. Another alum felt “not enough time allowed for individual attention” was a weakness of this facility.

On third party sites ratings were mostly positive. 356 reviewers on Google gave an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars.[1] On the facility's Facebook page

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Reviews from loved ones of alum were limited at the time of this writing and mixed. Two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the program's family participation four out of five stars. Similar to alumni reviews, the loved ones felt holistic options were mediocre or lacking, but gave the level of staff experience four and five out of five star ratings.

The child of a former client gave the hospital five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. “It works. My father was nearly a lifetime alcoholic. He totally recovered,” the loved one wrote. Another anonymous loved one praised the quality of staff, but wrote that the program lacked time spent in counseling. “Security, quality of staff, cleanliness, accommodations were all nice. Lack activity, time spent being counseled not enough, too much free time,” the loved one wrote.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, Advocate Medical Center accepts private insurance, PPOs, HMOs, Medicaid, and Medicare. In addition, financial assistance is offered to those who qualify. Only 24.3 percent of facilities in the state accept Medicare.
