ABOUT NORTHWEST COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE (NCH) – KIRCHHOFF CENTER

Located in Arlington Heights, Ill., Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) provides substance abuse and behavioral health treatment for adults, as well as being one of the 182 (27 percent) treatment centers in the state to offer similar programming to adolescents (ages 12 to 18) out of its Kirchhoff Center. The newly renovated facility offers both inpatient and outpatient programs, and treats a wide range of issues, including co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, placing it in the 34.8 percent of Illinois facilities with the specifically-tailored programming.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, clients are assessed upon admission to determine the appropriate type of treatment plan. In addition to addiction, the facility also treats clients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and self-injurious behavior.

The inpatient program for adults utilizes evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness practices.

Clients participate in individual counseling, group and family therapy, relapse prevention workshops, and addiction education classes, as well as experiential activities such as animal-assisted therapy, yoga, meditation, and art therapy. The 12-step principles of AA are also introduced and practiced throughout the program.

As of 2016, 12.46 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 in the state of Illinois experienced a major depressive episode within that year. One option for adolescents at the Kirchoff Center is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) that is medically supervised and takes places five hours a day, Monday through Friday. Another is the intensive outpatient program (IOP), which combines three hours of daily clinical treatment with school work — NCH’s program offers academic assessments and can help parents coordinate their child’s education with school staff. Finally, continuing care is available for adolescents via personalized treatment plans that are developed by the clinical team, the client, and the family.

NCH’s website also notes the facility has a Generations Program, which is designed for people who are older than 50. This program is similar to the other inpatient and outpatient programs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s website indicates the treatment team includes board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, teachers, and licensed master’s degree-level clinicians. Additionally in Illinois, 99.2 percent of all substance abuse treatment centers have continuing education requirements for staff. One alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave five out of five stars for the staff's level of experience and training, and another alum awarded five out of five stars for the center's level of staff support.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Kirchhoff Center offers 82 inpatient beds and is set just across from NCH’s main hospital, offering quite a bit of availability, as the median number of clients in an inpatient facility at any given time is 13 individuals. The three people polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided four and five out of five stars for NCH’s accommodations and amenities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility mostly positive reviews, and they both indicated they would recommend Northwest Community Healthcare.

Both alumni gave particularly high praise for the center’s counseling and the staff’s dedication.“The counselor was very good and we spent many hours in group meetings. Very casual group meetings,” one of these alum reported, offering five stars for counseling options as well as extracurricular activities. The other reviewer awarded five stars to counseling options as well, along with five- out of five-star ratings for affordability, the center's treatment of co-occurring disorders, and whether or not the treatment was worth the cost.

The 19 individuals who left reviews for the Kirchhoff Center on Google at the time of this writing gave an overall 2.4- out of five star average.[1] Unlike the alumni polled by Rehabs.com, the alumni who left Google reviews complained about the NCH’s staff: “Some of the staff was just flat out rude,” Kaleigh wrote in a representative review. “They would make you feel like you are very much beneath them.”

On Yelp, four users generated a three-star average for the hospital as a whole to date.[2] Issues with billing were commonly noted, and one representative commenter wrote, "The communication is terrible."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing felt the facility offered worthwhile treatment, but wished the program was more individualized and client-focused. “Not enough one on one treatment,” this parent of a former client said. “The center did a pretty good job treating my daughter but could have been a little more extensive.” Still, four out of five stars were awarded for most categories, including the level of family participation, the counseling options, the admissions & discharge procedures, and whether or not the program was worth the cost.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, most major insurance companies are accepted. Discounts are offered to self-pay clients, and for those who are uninsured, the facility will help clients find the funding options that may be available to them, such as Illinois Medicaid, Kid Care or Family Care programs, Illinois Violent Crime Victims' Assistance Fund, other government-sponsored plans, grants, community funding, etc.

[1] GoogleReviews)
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/northwest-community-hospital-arlington-heights-2
