Editorial Review

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP HOUSE

Located less than 30 miles from Cape Girardeau in southern Illinois, The Fellowship House is a rehabilitative detoxification and substance abuse treatment program for adults and youth. The facility uses American Society of Medicine Addiction (ASAM) criteria and introduces its clients to established self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) throughout both residential and outpatient programs. The center also treats gambling addiction and those with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All prospective clients undergo a scheduled clinical assessment and are assigned a case manager prior to beginning treatment. As the Fellowship House offers treatment at three different levels of care for adults, this initial process helps clinicians determine an appropriate plan.

The detoxification program serves clients 18 years and older and, as such, Fellowship House is among 3.6 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in the state that offer residential, non-hospital detoxification services. Along with good nutrition, rest, and group work, participants withdraw from alcohol and some drugs typically in three to five days.

Clients then may transition to residential and outpatient treatment services offered by the center. Programming makes use of a variety of approaches for participants in recovery to set new goals in life, including individual and group counseling, educational sessions, recreation and leisure, nutrition, and aftercare planning. Family involvement also is a crucial component of recovery and, therefore, is encouraged whenever possible.

Residential care typically includes 25 hours or more of treatment per week whereas outpatient treatment ranges from one to nine hours per week of group and one-on-one counseling.

Programming for teens aged 12 to 18 similarly consists of assessment and consultation, treatment, and aftercare. Referrals are made where needed. In Illinois, the facility is among the 26.5 percent of facilities to provide specialized programming for adolescents.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Fellowship House is licensed by the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and certified by Medicaid. All patients work with their assigned case managers and counselors throughout treatment. A stated goal of the facility is “to provide excellent training in various areas to staff and community members."

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former clients of The Fellowship House polled by Rehabs.com to date submitted moderately positive feedback about their experiences. One of the reviewers, who wrote unequivocally that “This facility saved my life period,” awarded perfect five stars for 12-step activities and likelihood to recommend the facility; four stars for affordability, connectivity/visitor policy, counseling options, and staff experience and training; three stars for facility cleanliness and upkeep as well as family participation; but only one star for holistic offerings.

The other alum, L.M., listed affordability as a strength of the facility, but wanted Rehabs.com to know about the “high employee turnover.” This reviewer assigned the top five stars for the center’s 12-step activities; four out of five stars for affordability, facility cleanliness and upkeep, family participation, and likelihood to recommend; three stars for connectivity/visitor policy and staff experience and training; and similar to the other alum, rated holistic offerings only one star.

On secondary sites, The Fellowship House received favorable coverage to date: 4.6 out of five stars based on five reviews on Google and three perfect five-star ratings on the facility’s unofficial Facebook page. [1] [2] In all, seven of the eight reviewers on both of these sites gave the facility the top five stars. They commented about the “very nice” staff and “very helpful” classes. In representative reviews, Joshua on Google wrote: “Amazing. Changes lives,” while on Facebook wrote: “The best place to go if ur serious about getting sober.” Alternatively, the three-star reviewer considered the program “Hit and miss.”

FINANCING

The Fellowship House receives funding, partly or in whole, by two separate agencies: the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and the Federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Fund. The facility’s website notes that it will contact clients’ “health insurance company for prior approval of planned treatment or for billing purposes.”

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fellowship-House-Alcoholism-Prevention-Treatment-Center/116956101697953
