Editorial Review

ABOUT PROJECT ADAM

Alcohol Drug Abuse Ministries, more commonly known by the acronym Project ADAM, is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 by a group of Christian ministers who took it upon themselves to battle addiction after the local government programs experienced budget cuts. Located in the small town of Winder, Ga., just outside of the city of Atlanta, Project ADAM offers a one-year residential rehabilitation program for adult men. Outpatient treatment is also offered.

Project ADAM bases its treatment programs around education and counseling. While most clients come to project ADAM through the court system, voluntary enrollment is also accepted. Detox services are not available on-site. Project ADAM is one of the few, 86 (about 27 percent) of facilities in Georgia that are operating as non-profits.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Following a thorough clinical evaluation, each client is assigned an individualized treatment plan which incorporates a combination of evidence-based and Christian-based therapies, medication management, case management, and skills development.

The facility practices moral reconation therapy, which emphasizes relapse prevention for individuals convicted of nonviolent crime. The first stage of treatment is education, based on 12-steps principles and Biblical teaching. Clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions, some of which may focus on special topics such as on culture, gender, feelings management, trauma, and health. Project ADAM offers several other programs for court-ordered clients, or those struggling with legal issues, that range from DUI risk reduction, random drug testing, family and community education, and intervention.

The next phase of residential treatment, which typically occurs after the individual has been in treatment for 90-days, emphasizes goal-setting and expects the client to take on more responsibility. Clients will have access to vocational, GED, and parenting classes, and will be expected to maintain employment. The remaining phases allow for weekend passes off-site and include random drug testing, recreational activities, and assistance with finding a job.

Additionally, three levels of outpatient treatment are offered for adults and adolescents who may not need residential treatment or have completed residential treatment and are looking for a step-down in intensity.

Following graduation from the residential program, clients are encouraged to participate in aftercare opportunities and to maintain contact with the Project ADAM staff and alumni.

Staff Credentials

The facility currently doesn’t offer information regarding its treatment staff aside from a reference to a particular psychiatrist: Dr. Ganiat Jaiyesinmi, M.D. However, alumni reviews indicate that staff tended to be viewed as adequate. While two CiteHealth reviews were critical of the facility’s management, a majority of commenters praised staff members for their professionalism and help in achieving sobriety.

Project ADAM is CARF certified to provide ASAM Level III.1 Residential treatment to males (over age 19), and CARF certified to provide Level 1 Intensive Outpatient (IOP). This makes Project ADAM one of the 186 (about 59 percent) of Georgia facilities to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

On its website, the 36-bed residential facility is described a having a family-like atmosphere that supports clients as they work on recovery from chemical dependency. While in treatment, the men are expected to hold off-site jobs if able and to volunteer in the community. Church attendance is also required. Men are assigned chores and lodging, meals, and transportation to group events are included in the program’s cost.

While no specific information or images regarding the residential program’s living amenities, a list of recommended items to bring includes “shower shoes” and “toiletries”, suggesting shared bathroom and hygienic accommodations. While cell phones are permitted, the facility asks that individuals do not bring cameras, electronic readers, personal computers, or items of value (i.e. jewelry). Small radios and tape players are encouraged.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, no alums have submitted reviews to Rehabs.com.

Secondary sites provided a variety of mixed feedback: some positive, some negative. Five CiteHealth reviews were mixed.[1] There, the program’s overall rating was 2.7 out of five stars. While there was remarkably little variance for the major ratings, particularly regarding the Quality of Care, Staff Rating, Facility Rating, and Promptness Rating metrics, as most hovered between 2.6 and 2.7 out of five stars.

On the facility’s Facebook page, which it can manage, there is a 4.5 out of five-star rating, averaged from 22 reviews.[2] Several alumni mentioned both the importance of being ready to work for recovery and they valued the program’s spiritual emphasis, with particular praise directed at the learning aspect of the program. Alum Kylie wrote: “They taught me how to re-enter the world and not be so leery of the people and things around me.”

On Google, 14 reviewers left an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars.[3] The majority of those who commented praised the staff and cited the religious nature of the treatment as being effective. Others suggested that the long-term effectiveness of treatment is praiseworthy.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one parent polled by Rehabs.com identified family participation as a strength and gave four or five stars out of five to 12 of 15 metrics measured. The parent also called the program “family oriented,” and thought it ideal for an “individual that is serious about getting getting help.

FINANCING

The facility’s website indicates that Medicaid, making Project ADAM one of the 163 (about 52 percent) of Georgia treatment facilities to accept Medicaid as a form of payment. The facility also accepts private health insurance plans, with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia given specific mentions on Project ADAM’s website.

[1]http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/georgia/cities/winder/project-adam#reviews
[2]https://www.facebook.com/pg/projectadamga.org/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[3] GoogleReviews
