Editorial Review

ABOUT ATHENS AREA COMMENCEMENT CENTER

Located on the western outskirts of Athens, GA, the Athens Area Commencement Center is one of the 163 private, for-profit family-operated treatment centers in Georgia. It offers outpatient, partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), and aftercare services for adults seeking treatment for substance abuse. It is one of the 17.5% of treatment facilities in Georgia that provides an outpatient detox program, where clients can detox at home.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Athens Area Commencement Center specializes in outpatient services for multiple forms of substance abuse including opiates and alcohol. These services are offered six days per week in morning and evening sessions to accommodate client’s schedules.

The detox program is also outpatient-based, and clients receive medication management and access to medical detox services as needed. According to a 2016 SAMHSA survey, AACC is one of the few, less than 20% of facilities nationwide, that offer opioid-focused detox programs. In order to qualify for the facility's outpatient detox program, clients must meet certain medical criteria, including being suitably stable to detox outside of constant medical supervision. The facility is equipped to treat clients detoxing from opiates, alcohol, and other drugs.

The Commencement Center uses a combination of 12-Step influences that are used at 73% of facilities in the country, traditional talk therapies, and community-focused treatment methods. Clients participate in weekly 12-Step and group meetings to focus on building support for the recovery process. The facility also operates under the disease model of addiction, and all treatments are designed to promote curing addiction rather than treating it with recurring treatment methods.

There is a dedicated program for professionals that lasts six weeks, and includes advocacy services with the licensing board in the client's industry. The program offers weekly group meetings, relapse prevention planning, advocacy meetings, and drug testing, and each client is assigned a personal monitor, too. Clients are also required to attend 12-step meetings and work with a sponsor.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Athens Area Commencement Center includes an M.D. who is board certified in family medicine, licensed social workers, and registered nurses. Licensed and accredited counselors and medical technicians are on staff along with a pharmacist that manages medications for clients. In 2014, the facility added an aftercare coordinator to assist clients with ongoing care plans. During treatment, there may be interactions with Beau, the facility’s therapy dog.

Athens Area Commencement Center part of the 28% of facilities in the country that are CARF accredited, certified by the State of Georgia, and operates in conjunction with the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy.
