Editorial Review

ABOUT AGENCY FOR COMMUNITY TREATMENT SERVICES - OUTPATIENT

Based in Tampa, Fla., Agency for Community Treatment Services (ACTS) provides behavioral health and social services for adults, children, and families. Treatment for substance use may be accessed through a network of centers across five Florida counties. At its 56th Street and Henry Avenue facilities, ACTS offers a range of outpatient-based treatment services for substance use, from drug screenings and court-ordered assessments to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and individual counseling.

ACTS is one of only 82 (11.5 percent of 716 total) Florida treatment facilities to offer ambulatory detox. Crisis care for youth and adults is available at separate Tampa locations, as well as an adult residential program in Mulberry and one for adolescents in Thonotosassa.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At the 56th Street location of ACTS, clients can begin a comprehensive assessment process on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Clinicians provide referrals for a continuum of services, which for some clients starts with an intensive outpatient detox program.

Detox clients follow the SMART Recovery model. Clients may receive medication, such as naltrexone or Vivitrol if indicated, attend psychoeducation classes and 12-step meetings, and participate in random drug screenings.

The integrated detox and rehab program meets for 28 hours each week. ACTS also operates a Recovery Support program, which clients attend either after relapsing or in the early stages of addiction. The program facilitates an array of groups and individual counseling services. Some ACTS programs also include recreational therapy.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The multidisciplinary treatment teams featured on the ACTS website include physicians and such master’s-level clinicians as nurses, social workers and mental health counselors. Some services are provided by certified addiction professionals (CAP) and certified peer or recovery support specialists.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, Rehabs.com has received feedback for ACTS's outpatient programming from one former client. Although the alum found the ACTS facility lacking in security and expressed only moderate satisfaction with its cleanliness and maintenance, the alum offered four- and perfect five-star ratings for the staff’s level of training and experience and the program’s affordability. The wait time for services was the only weakness cited.

Feedback on Google for the 56th Street and Henry Avenue ACTS facilities also leaned positively. A total of seven individuals contributed to an average rating of 3.9 out of five stars. Two alumni criticized the facility, one for poor communication and the other for drug screening procedures, while two others praised the program’s testing services.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Neither of the two loved ones polled to date by Rehabs.com would recommend ACTS to others. One reported receiving no follow-up direction or support for their relative after detox, and both awarded just one star apiece for the facility’s cleanliness and opportunities for family participation in treatment.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Eight former and current employees reviewed ACTS Tampa facilities on Indeed, with mixed opinions for the facility. Staff tended to express respect for fellow team members and their clients, but more than half reported some form of under-staffing or poor supervision practices, which created unhealthy environments. In a representative review, one former employee wrote: “Many of the staff there are underpaid and overworked."[2]

FINANCING

Agency for Community Treatment Services is a private, non-profit organization which offers a sliding fee scale and accepts Medicaid and many major insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Sunshine State, according to its website.

[1] https://goo.gl/Uvp7x7
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Agency-For-Community-Treatment-Services,-Inc/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Tampa%2C+FL
