ABOUT CHARLOTTE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE

Based in Punta Gorda, Fla., Charlotte Behavioral Health Care provides a full continuum of behavioral health services for children, adolescents, and adults. As part of its offering, the center provides detox, residential treatment, and outpatient treatment for adults seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Substance abuse treatment is also available for adolescents, but on an outpatient basis only.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At Charlotte Behavioral Health Care, clients experiencing withdrawal symptoms begin their stay with detox, which is medically assisted and typically lasts between five and seven days. In Florida, only 73 facilities offer non-hospital, inpatient detox services. Medication is prescribed as needed, and clients participate in individual, group, and family counseling, 12-Step meetings, and meditation groups.

Treatment also may include yoga, meditation, Suboxone treatment, and family participation. Suboxone is used in just under 30 percent of Florida’s facilities.

Once stabilized, clients may move on to the center’s residential program, which lasts between three and four weeks making it one of Florida’s 139 long-term treatment programs. In this phase of treatment, clients continue to participate in therapy and 12-Step meetings, but they are also introduced to SMART Recovery principles. Residential treatment emphasizes self-empowerment, improving family relationships, and creating support systems.

The center’s outpatient treatment program may be used as a step-down option for those leaving residential treatment, or as a stand-alone treatment for clients who do not require the structure and intensity of inpatient care. This includes some parenting specific support, including 12-week long nurturing parenting groups and in-home treatment services in Charlotte and Lee Counties.

The different treatment paths also focus on addressing co-occurring disorders that often contribute to clients’ substance abuse. A range of therapies and educational methods are used to address problem behaviors and underlying influences. Specific treatment focuses are provided for clients based on gender, age, and other needs. Teleservices are also available.

The Self-Help and Recovery Exchange Spot (SHARE) is a peer-led, drop-in service for those with severe mental illness.
