Editorial Review

ABOUT CENTRAL CARE MISSION

Central Care Mission (CCM), located in Orlando, Fla., offers long-term residential treatment and resources to men struggling with addiction, homelessness, and poverty. The non-profit, Christian faith-based facility emphasizes whole-person recovery through Bible study, life skills training, healthy relationship development, and manual work. Of Florida’s 668 substance abuse treatment facilities in 2017, just 139 (20.8 percent) offered non-hospital residential care for longer than 30 days, and 295 (44.2 percent) provided specialized treatment for men. Detox services are not available at CCM.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the Central Care Mission website, this two-year residential program builds on a synthesis of Christian biblical principles and “the best of science, medicine, and psychology,” in a therapeutic community.

To be admitted, clients should call CCM to schedule an initial phone interview. Following this is an on-site process that includes completing a written application, receiving a tour of the facility, reviewing the facility handbook, and participating in a staff interview. Court-ordered clients can be accepted.

Residents can expect to participate in activities and follow a schedule that is designed to develop wellness in five areas: emotional, vocational, financial, physical, and spiritual. While the facility’s website does not specify particular psychotherapeutic modalities used, it does place an emphasis on reading, exercise, and church involvement.

CCM is among the 38.6 percent of facilities nationwide to provide employment counseling or training for clients. The facility’s work program is built mainly on nearby day labor assignments through staffing companies with which CCM partners. Random drug and alcohol screenings are required.

Aftercare in the form of alumni support includes weekly meetings, accountability, professional guidance, and assistance with various stable living needs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The president and CEO of Central Care Mission is an ordained pastor. Other central staff members, some of whom are program alumni, include a case manager and job placement coach. Local volunteer mentors meet with residents once a week.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients reside in four dorms at Central Care Mission. The property has on-site access to Lake Mann, where men can fish. Elsewhere on campus are a basketball court, weight pit, and chapel. Phone use and visitation are limited, requiring progress in the program and staff approval.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Feedback for Central Care Mission from former clients at the time of this writing was almost universally favorable. The one alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend the facility to others, granting maximum five-star ratings for several aspects evaluated. These included the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, exercise activities, the staff’s level of training and experience, and overall individual counseling.

Lower ratings reflected the program’s tight focus and structure, with two stars for leisure activity, one for holistic offerings, and one for flexibility in treatment options. The reviewer did express appreciation for CCM’s approach to recovery addressing more than chemical dependency.

On Google, 25 individuals rated CCM 4.1 out of five stars on average.[1] Repeated comments characterized the facility as life-changing. One alum highlighted the positive results in his finances and support network.
